GREAT ASS!

It was absolutely blew my mind Dan!

Another thing that shows how similar Vincent is to Neil is the bank robbery scene. Neil just wanted to get away, and was primarily dangerous while being chased because he didn't want to go back to prison. If Vincent had been following standard protocol, they would have let the robbers get away to harm fewer people, but Vincent was pushing people out of his intended line of fire just to get to Neil. Vincent later made an amazing shot by not hitting the little girl by the fountain, but that was also a shot he should have never taken.

From what I recall, the intention was to dub over the gunshots as normal, but when they went to review the dub, they realized they'd lost something significant and went back to the raw audio. Many documentaries, videos, and articles have been written on it or mentioned it, and yet no one's done it since. So bizarre.

Such a great movie. But it also boggles the mind that no one tries to repeat the bank robbery success in terms of audio. Perhaps there are limitations in modern filmmaking in terms of too much ambient noise, but you'd think proper planning could eliminate that noise and allow ambient capture like Mann did. Ah, well. At least we have this glorious masterpiece!

Fun facts about the movie: 1. "Val Kilmer was thrilled to learn that the moment in the gunbattle scene where he runs out of bullets, and rapidly changes his magazine, is regularly shown to Marine recruits as an example of how to perform the action properly. " 2. "Rather than dubbing in the gunshots during the bank robbery shoot-out, Michael Mann had microphones carefully placed around the set so that the audio could be captured live. This added to the impact of the scene, because it sounded like no other gunfight shown on-screen." "During the famous bank robbery gunfight, Mann directed the actors portraying the police to aim deliberately and only fire their rifles in the semi-automatic mode. This showed that the police were taking care not to hit bystanders. By contrast the robbers - concerned only with their own safety - fire their weapons on full automatic, striking several bystanders in the process. In addition, the weapons accessible to detectives would normally be semi-automatic only." (All of these were from IMDB). That shootout scene scared a lot of citizens in LA, as the gunfire noise bounced off of the buildings in the city for a lot of people to hear. Michael Mann did such an amazing job on this film.
