Character vs Story
Added 2023-04-25 19:18:11 +0000 UTCSo this is a rather unfair question but I’m doing it anyway. Do you gravitate more towards a character-driven story or a plot-driven story and why?
Spoiler: this connect to an upcoming pod so we might use a few answers on air!

2023-05-12 02:48:34 +0000 UTCI tend to favor plot because it immediately tells me who the characters are and what their journey will be which helps me decide if I want to take the ride. For example, I immediately knew I wanted to watch Business Proposal after reading the summary. It’s a contract relationship with a rich guy and a woman who is secretly his employee. This means there will be forced proximity to allow to opposite but compatible people to fall in love as they hilariously bicker and bregrudingly come to respect each other. I absolutely got what I expected and loved it! Pure character stories tend to fair better in a movie where you can focus on a specific aspect of someone’s life and it doesn’t drag on for too long. Whereas television is long form and needs a bit more structure. Call It Love was a recent series that really let the characters drive the story but the personal goals of both the protagonists and antagonists gave the story enough structure for the characters to change and grow in a satisfying way.

2023-05-03 06:33:29 +0000 UTCI satisfied my college English requirement with a class called “Humanities for Engineers”. And they encouraged us to use Cliffs Notes! Can someone give me the Cliffs Notes version of character driven vs. plot driven stories - and provide a few examples?
