Pod Recs
Added 2023-01-23 18:53:58 +0000 UTCWe love you, you love us (I hope) and this is all lovely. But what is even better? More love!
In the thread below go ahead and share a podcast (or even link to a specific episode) that you think other folks in the group might enjoy, or it just fills your own nerdy bucket. Can be k-drama or k-pop related, but we are multi-faceted people and so if you are obsessed with listening to a show on the evolution of pickling or the sleep cycles of medieval serfs or a deep dive on Gargoyle artists...I'm here for it and I bet some others are too (Lia)

My all-time favorite pod is season 2 of “In The Dark”. It tells the true story of a man convicted of murder in Mississippi in 1996 w/ lots of prosecutorial misconduct and very shoddy police work. It took a team of investigative journalists moving to the town for over a year to uncover the truth. It was riveting!

2023-01-25 14:49:01 +0000 UTCI have a few pods that aren't k-drama related or are only tangentially k-drama related, but very good. Noble Blood's episode called "The Rice Box" is about Prince Sado of the Joseon Dynasty. He is the "skipped king" that you see in The Red Sleeve. It gave me SO MUCH MORE context for the relationship between the grandfather and grandson. (Noble Blood is by the same folks who produce Lore.) An oldie but a goodie: Sooooo Many White Guys with Phoebe Robinson. Her episodes with Eric Nam and Tom Hanks are excellent. I think Lea mentioned this one once, but I really liked Authentic, which is a podcast about Tablo and Hell Joseon. One that gives me a lot of laughs is Adulting with Michelle Beauteau and Jordan Carlos. The episode featuring ALOK made me cry in a very good way. I really love Harry Potter and the Sacred Text. It's by two Harvard theology students, and they talk about how some people do not follow sacred texts (like the Bible or Qu'ran or Torah), but find comfort in other books, like Harry Potter. They read it once chapter per week (ALL 7 BOOKS!) through a theme. They then introduce a spiritual practice from around the world to apply to that chapter. I'm absolutely non-religious, but I LOVE this one. If you like Chris Matthews from MSNBC, his pod called Why Is This Happening is great. He doesn't talk only about politics of the day, but also greater issues. He often has authors on, etc. My favorite episodes are Dying of Whiteness by Jonathan Metzl, an overview of Middle Eastern internal politics with Dexter Filkins, and Allow Me to Retort by Elie Mystal. I used to work in Repro Rights and as a lawyer. I really like BOOM! Lawyered. The most recent season talks about more than just repro-rights. It also talks about a lot of the other BONKERS cases the SCOTUS is hearing. Within The Wires is by the same people who do Welcome to Night Vale, but each season is different. I really only like the second season, which is a fictional series of museum guide tapes which discuss exhibitions of a certain artist's paintings and a mystery behind them. Each season is related within a singular dystopian society, but you can listen to them separately and still understand it. It's tough to explain, but quite good. Mortified is pretty hilarious. It is people reading their tween- and teenage diaries. I listen to it, and I saw a live show of it once. It makes me laugh so hard! Another good one for you feminists out there: I Weigh with Jameela Jamil. For spooky stories, The Long Hallway is great! For my last suggestion: Wind of Change. It talks about how a song by the Scorpions that brought down the Iron Curtain may have actually been written by the CIA. Heavy Metal as espionage? Interesting stuff.
