Sell Us On a Drama!

Hey ya’ll, on today’s pod we try to sell each other—and you—on a drama that we’ve recently watched. This is your chance. In the comments give a pitch (without spoilers) on why we should all check out a drama near and dear to your heart!

I am early on but, yeah, girl's got some issues. I'm hoping there is some connection. Right now she is dancing around the kitchen with her bag of ramen so...

Monica

Aha, K2 is one I have started but didn't finish because I felt zero connection to the female lead. I kept hoping she would make some sense to me but her whole situation and behaviors seem so implausible I couldn't get dialed in. If you have any idea how to get around that please share.

@Alys - I also went down the Lee-Seung-gi rabbit hole after KO with King 2 Hearts, Kangchi, the Beginning and even some reality show with him and a Chinese cutie named Jasper. I think it is called something like Twogether. I have to watch Vagabond and Mouse but am in the middle of K2 since these ladies introduced me to Healer and well, now I am here.

Monica

I am in the middle of Korean Odyssey right now. The zombie is stealing the show but I'll never get enough of Lee Seung-gi as a manic pixie dream boy. I recently saw Vagabond and I'm crushing hard, haha. (Where is season 2 of that btw, gosh!)

Alice

Step right up and let me tell you about a few favs. Like mythology, try Korean Odyssey. A heroine who sees ghosts, a bromance between a devil king and monkey king, and a zombie who stole the show (in my humble). Need more grim reapers in your life? Let me suggest Black. I love how reapers are portrayed in Kdramas and this is no exception. Plus, he is very easy on the eyes. Want a historical? I’m watching Scarlet Heart. So much deception and avarice. So much yearning. This one is tugging on my heart and while I am not done with it, I think it will linger.

Monica

Just listened. Ahn Bo-hyun in that maroon suit lives rent free in my mind, and I would pay it to stay there.

The past two podcast episodes have been so fun. Thank you! On my walk I just wanted to shout, "Yes more men in baseball caps". That's all I ever want. I'm sold on Tomorrow because I do love Grim Reapers. I'm watching a Thai BL, Dear Doctor, with a GR in it and love it for that reason alone! Thanks for the gentle nudge towards these dramas.

will it make me hungry watching it? :D

Sarah @afternoonaasks

This is on my watchlist!!

Chocolate. It's a slice of life with characters who have been beaten down and refuse to give up. There is a wonderful hospice crew for all the feels, a lot of vegetable chopping, and star crossed lovers. It was my second kdrama and the one that convinced me that my love forCLOY wasn't a fluke.

Hannah

Somehow I never watched this. I'm moving it up my list.

I Hear Your Voice: This drama is from 2013 so it’s not talked about as much, but it’s my absolute favorite drama. It’s a little bit of every genre. Rom-Com, thriller, legal drama with a bit of fantasy in the form of a male lead who can hear people’s thoughts. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it gave me the creeps, and it made me think. Has one of the best villains, it has been 9 years and the actor still creeps me out. Also features my favorite kdrama mom Kim Hae Sook. Female lead is spunky, imperfect, and unapologetic. If you like Lee Jong Suk, this is one of his early roles.

Jules

Oh yes!!! Totally second your recommendation for this, I love this drama, have banged on lots about it in previous weekend watch posts but loved this, such great writing

Sarah @afternoonaasks

I second all of this! If you love high school romances/first love stories, then My Love Mix-Up is absolutely worth a watch. It’s so charming and skips most of the typical HS negativity (bullies, mean girls, etc.). It’s a quick drama that offers both sweet and laugh out loud moments. I saw it in the last week and I’m already ready for a rewatch.

One I've not heard mentioned a lot but which I really enjoyed start to finish was Do You Like Brahms. Both leads are introverted and kind of quiet but also very strong and true to themselves. The romance is super sweet and I love both Kim Min Jae and Park Eun Bin. (on Viki) Honorable mentions to: Ho Goo's Love (available on Amazon Prime) -The cutest baby and the cutest Choi Woo Shik Live Up to Your Name (Netflix) -Time travel rom-com takes place in Joseon and modern day Seoul. Le Coup de Foudre (CDrama on Viki) -Based on a book which is the true story of the author and her husband, AND the two lead actors are now married IRL.

There is an adorable Japanese BL on Viki called “My Love Mix-Up” that I really enjoyed. It is a high school romance. The male lead borrows an eraser from a girl he is crushing on and is devastated to see another boy’s name hearted on it. He drops the eraser, the other boy picks it up, and he protects her identity by pretending he is the one with the crush. The other boy seriously thinks about whether he can reciprocate the feelings, and it kicks off one of the sweetest dramas I’ve ever watched. It is extremely cute! There are only 10 episodes around 24 minutes each, so it’s an easy watch if you want something progressive and disarmingly earnest.
