Business Proposal (watch for spoilers)

Hey everyone! We rarely record a podcast so quickly after a drama airs, but we're so excited to talk all things BP, that we're recording it tomorrow! Please comment anything you'd like us to discuss!

Business Proposal (watch for spoilers)

I am late to the party - and still would be waiting if it weren’t for the fact that I had to make an emergency trip to the UK this week and realised that if I downloaded all the episodes then never went back online when I got back to Switzerland, the episodes would stay there - so I I am only at episode 7 but I have this to say …. As a pianist and piano teacher, you have got to love a story where the ML plays the piano and at that point the FL realises she is unable to resist him. I vote for more alluring scenes involving pianos! (That was an Election Broadcast on behalf of the Pianists are Sexy Political Party)

A lot of the first half of the drama used the major plot points from the webtoon, but then about two thirds of the way through it really kinda diverged. In the webtoon, the grandpa doesn’t disapprove of Hari, the conflict is more about Hari not really trusting that Taemoo is with her bc he actually likes her, but just bc he set his mind on marrying the first blind date no matter who it was. And there was definitely no year long separation. There was also a lot more of him actually working and helping at the chicken shop. Taemoo was not in the accident, it was Sunghoon in the webtoon in protection of youngseo and its step one in getting her dad to approve of him. Step 2 is Youngseo promising her dad that she will finally step up and help take the lead with his company.

hmmm. yes. 12 really did have a different feel. Started a little in episode 11 for me though with the underwhelming second lead proposal response. She just stared at him.

I generally hate them but the time jump in My Mister was good and I didn’t mind it in I am Not a Robot, or Still 17

I so loved this drama but it felt like episode 12 had a different writer. The main leads weren’t particularly kind to each other, the reunion was flat and the proposal was an afterthought - and she refused to say yes. It was a small ding in an otherwise perfect romcom.

Timing can’t always be controlled. I think that one of the things that has led to so much love for this drama is that it was broadcast at the same timing as several other dramas that have been wrenching (39, 25-21) or mostly disappointing (Forecasting Weather). The writer of Business Proposal likely had no control over that timing. But I think it’s a bit of luck or irony that has given juice to response to the drama. That’s not meant to detract in any way from the fun of watching (most of) the drama, just an observation.

Time jumps—hate ‘em! But do we ever love them? Can you think of a drama where the time jump works?

There are SO MANY Kdrama tropes to revel in: Visit to amusement park, FL loves all the rides, ML is terrified even of the merry-go-round (BTW it’s the same amusement park in all the dramas, isn’t it?) ML drives his car frantically fast to get to the FL, crashes the car, and ends up in hospital ML/Hospital patient rips out the IV, or, in this case, rips off the cast on his arm, to chase after the FL (and in this drama, in a remarkably short time, he is healed enough to pick up the FL and carry her into the bedroom [and BTW, where was the apartment where they slept together, since the ML lived with his grandfather?]) Walking away from uneaten food, drink Time jumps (as noted by many above!) Oops, I tripped and fell into you, the couple and camera freezing for a long time Slow-motion kisses, repeated several times from different angles Stomach growling Close up of hands clenched in anger or frustration Couple at playground, sitting on swings, sometimes happy, sometimes sad, sorting out the problems of the world; in this drama, there’s a variation—the drunken female trope—rescued at the lay ground by the ML Meddling parents; okay, that’s not a trope so much as a major plot line, in this case a two-fer with the grandfather and 2FL’s dreadful father

Such a random hobby. 🤣

I also liked Kang Tae-moo with Ha-ri’s family. If only we could have seen Chairman Kang fully accept Ha-ri (instead of that reference while he’s off screen - a year later!).

After all the big moments in episode 11 (The roadside proposal! The hotel!), I was fully prepared for that energy to continue in episode 12. I second the other comments: double wedding, flash-forward to great-grandkids… I was ready for all of it. Instead it seemed to simmer out a bit. Still loved the drama, but that last episode needed a little nudge. Also, can someone please explain to me Cha Sung-hoon’s model building at the very end? Is that not the most random gap-year hobby?

Nicole H

I found the ending scenes a wee bit lacklustre. But at least the forced separation near the end felt a bit more organic than most. I would have liked to have seen more fireworks over Yoora’s behaviour, vs the lame scene with Min-woo. I enjoyed Young-seo’s arc, although I would have loved to have seen Cha Sung-hoon as her secretary. I also liked the scene with her colleagues, and I also liked how Ha-ri was with Chairman Kang. And I liked the scene where Kang Tae-moo is with her and her parents.

The OST was fantastic. I enjoyed how the MeloMance song kept reappearing throughout. I’m a big MeloMance fan, so I was really happy to see them in the drama. I hope it’s a big moment for them.

Claudia Copeland

What are your thoughts on the music? Wonder if MeloMance and/or their worry dolls got a boost from this

As opposed to the use of multiple orphan scenarios which felt like checking a box rather than furthering a storyline. The guy lived in NY - he could have gotten mugged in the rain, it didn't need to be the death of his parents. And what ever happened with that rumor that his relatives plotted his parents' death, which was the reason given for why his grandpa had fired all the family from the subsidiaries and none is them are ever seen or heard from?

Hannah

The whole production was charming and charmingly self aware. Perhaps best exemplified by the use of a background k-drama to illustrate what was happening? Best use of trope as a concept
