Reply 1988--What do you need us to talk about?

Ya'll. We're finally deep diving Reply 1988. This will be a two-part series (with a gap in between to tackle Love and Leashes). The first pod with be more of a traditional deep dive into characters and plot points. The second pod will be "I Have Questions" and tackle some of the historical nuances and slice-of-life aspects that appear in the drama.

If you haven't watched Reply 1988...don't read in the comments. THIS IS NOT A DRAMA THAT YOU WANT SPOILED. Go watch it now, shoo shoo.

If you've seen it...well, let's get to it. Tell us what you want to hear.

R88 is such a  richly layered drama that I'm struggling to figure out what aspects to get into in a mere hour. I could discuss it for hours.

I just read that our FL and SML starting dating then and perhaps are still together. Does it make me shallow that that brings me great joy :) ?

I don't want to post any spoilers for Reply 1994 so if anyone wants to see the quote I mentioned above, it is about three paragraphs long and I just read it again and was really moved by it. It's here--the last three paragraphs before the reader comments section. Please don't read if you haven't seen--it will spoil the whole finale for you: https://www.dramabeans.com/2013/12/answer-me-1994-episode-21-final/

I guess what I'd love to know more about is the context with the pro-democracy movement, and also the background of the Olympics and what that meant to people at the time.

To echo what Lauren said above, it was extra meaningful to me because in 1988, I was almost the exact age of the main characters. I graduated from high school in 1987. I had that same experience of it feeling so relatable and nostalgic even though it was a show from the other side of the world, but also getting all these insights into different aspects of daily life in Korea at the time, the pro-democracy movement, etc. There is a line from Reply 1994 that I really love that says something like "we were the first generation to grow up in both analog and digital," and that is a really big part of all the Reply series, especially 1994.

This isn't actually a question but why were we cheated out of Ra Mi Ran's full song performance, they didn't even let us see itin it's full glory in the party at the end *sob* But mainly, if you could add 3 scenes to the ending what would you have - I feel I didn't get proper closure (not just with Jeong Hwan but others too)

A lot of these are good and I’ll be adding to the Reply 1988: I Have Questions Pod which we will record soon. Reply 1988 will be at least two pods. It’s so much content

I think we do see her make that decision. But I will just leave it at that, bc I think it's a really good discussion point for the pod - can't wait to hear this part of the conversation!

Grace

That is really interesting!!!!

I love everyone's questions/comments/ analysis.....I may have to watch a 3rd time. Some of these plotpoints are blurred now.....

My only actual issue with this show: do we ever see Duk-Sun decide who she likes without knowing they like her first? Such a good question from Dong-Ryong, and somewhat uncomfortable that it's not clear she was ever able to answer. But also, they were happy so it's fine?

Hannah

Also, when I watched it I found it interesting to compare my 1988 to theirs. It was a strange mixture of nostalgia and being immersed in a completely different world. Probably a very different experience for viewers in different parts of the world, but also universally relatable and enjoyable.

Since you watched Hospital Playlist first did you miss the cameos from 1988?
