Tsundere Appreciation
Added 2022-01-31 20:04:01 +0000 UTCTsundere is a Japanese term for a character development process that depicts a character with a personality who is initially cold, stern, or stoic before gradually showing a warmer, friendlier side over time (often melting through love---sigh)
K-drama writers understand that this type of character is often catnip for viewers...and they deliver with LOTS of tsundere being featured in shows.
Sound off and give some appreciation for excellent Tsundere characters.

Hey there, I’m pretty new to this group but thrilled to be here - and what a great topic! There are a few Tsundere characters who have stolen my heart, some of whom have already been mentioned here but bear mentioning again. Like so many westerners (including our wonderful AD podcasters), CLOY was my gateway drama, and I believe that Captain Ri is the perfect Tsundere character. Nam Se-hee from BTIMFL was amazing. Yoo Ja-Seung from Monthly Magazine Home gave me a serious Kim Ji-seok problem. I think he and actress Jung So-min made the drama better than it was through their acting, until it crashed and burned near the end. (But I digress - either way, YJS was a good Tsundere character). Then I’m thinking about some other characters who might be Tsundere-light, but you still see aspects of that development and spoiler alert, I loved these guys: Ryan Gold from Her Private Life; Lee Gun from Fated to Love You, and the delightful Seo Gong-myung from Into the Ring. I feel like Ji-chang Wook’s dual characters in Healer also falls here. Finally, my most recent Tsundere hero/obsession - and I owe it to our esteemed Afternoona Delight podcast hosts: Kim Min-kyu from I’m Not A Robot. I’ve been going through your earlier episodes and gave this one a listen recently. After hearing the your rave reviews I decided to give it a go and absolutely loved it. It’s been a while since a drama captivated me like this one, to the point where I was staying up late and watching it over breakfast!! KMK went on such a journey through this series, and Yoo Seung-ho killed it, showing a deep emotional range and making what could have been a ridiculous premise utterly believable. (He wasn’t the only one - the whole cast was great - but I’m focusing on him b/c of the Tsundere topic). Thanks for the rec. After finishing the drama I listened to the podcast again and appreciated both the podcast and the show even more. Thank you! PS: I LOVE Heather’s observation about Soo-Ji as a Tsundere female in BTIMFL - she was amazing (and I loved her with CEO Ma).

2022-02-02 20:28:37 +0000 UTCHeather, I don’t know if you realized this, but exactly midway through episode 8 CEO Ma says to Soo-ji, “Well . . . so you’re the tsundere type when you date.” I happened to be watching this tonight and as I read the subtitle, my jaw literally dropped. If it wasn’t for this thread, his comment would have gone right over my head.

2022-02-02 03:49:52 +0000 UTCAll of these, definitely 👍🏼 Playful Kiss was the drama that started it all for me, and Ive watched the korean, taiwanese, & Japanese versions, but the taiwanese was definitely the best 👍🏼 and Goong! 🥰 im so excited for the remake! Is that still happening?

2022-02-01 06:40:59 +0000 UTCDr. Kim Jun Wan from HP is my one true tsundere love 😍. Though 18-yo me is crushing on Jung Hwan tsundere from Reply 1988

2022-02-01 02:10:01 +0000 UTCI feel like Choi Han Gyul from Coffee Prince was like this a bit. Maybe more arrogant than cold but it’s the first thing that came to mind for me. Also Kang Min Ho in Falling for Innocence.

2022-02-01 00:52:03 +0000 UTCMy catnip - You're Beautiful, Playful Kiss (all the versions but especially the Taiwanese version), and Princess Hours. All oldies but the ones that hooked me in kdramas for life.

2022-01-31 23:58:57 +0000 UTCKim Jung Wan from Hospital Playlist is one of my ultimate cold outside and all supposed grumps but who are marshmallows inside. I also love the ML in Still 17, who in first scene is like a total Yeti and oddball, cold and distant. Oh and also Seo In Guk’s Doom in Doom at your Service. A flawed drama but this character ❤️🔥🥰
