Real Life Meet Cute/Meet Mess

Today in our K-drama Support Group we talked about meet cutes/meet messes in K-dramas. At the end of the call, we thought it would be fun to invite folx to share their own stories. What's a real life meet cute/meet mess that you've experienced? It can be for an existing relationship or one that didn't stand the test of time. We all obviously love to hear about them :)

not every love story is a forever love story, but a good chase scene is a GREAT start!

Megan Erickson

Love a good romantic chase! Good start :)

I was on a job hunting trip during grad school, and flew from the E coast to the west coast for interviews. The concierge at my hotel kept chatting me up and I was kind of oblivious but we had some great conversations. As I was leaving for the airport he ran out of the hotel and caught me just as I was getting in a taxi and gave me his number. We ended up talking on the phone over the next year and I got a job near him after I graduated. We were married for 17 years and then sadly things went wrong. It's not how the story was supposed to end. But it was a good start and there were some good times.

I am loving everyone's stories! My meeting with hubs was super vanilla & low angst (internet date, moved in, marry, kids..) So I didn't think I had a contribution to this thread but then I remembered I kinda do! Back before Facebook days there was this short lived website that linked you with people who were in your 6 degrees of friends and via this I met 2 Swedish guys. I ended up having a long email correspondence with one of them, like super mega long emails that would take hours to write (and then use dial-up modem to send!) - and we agreed not to send each other photos (in my head I was living a romance obvs...) finally we were to meet FOR REAL in London - and just imagining what he looked like, and if he'd like me consumed by brain for weeks. Anyway we met, and hurrah! We did fancy each other, so we had a kinda long distance relationship for awhile then I went to Sweden to see him and being actually together for a week proved much more difficult. Whilst I was there, I rang and chatted with the other Swedish guy (they were both Uni friends) who I had kept casual contact with - and really got on with him (source of tension as original Swedish guy was jealous). Anyway broke up with Swede 1 and kept up friendly contact with Swede 2 until we then developed feelings and I ended up in another long distance romance spanning continents (I went to Singapore, he stayed in Sweden, then I went to Beijing and he went to Taiwan so we were then at least same timezone) and then it went the way of many LDR's - to breaking up (when he cheated on me with his now Taiwanese wife).... But I still love letter writing tropes in Romances, despite my own meet-mess real life experiences because falling for someone over words is still a heartmelt for me!

In my last year of art school I was home for winter break and hanging out with my little sister. She showed me the hilarious and terrible responses she got from a personal ad she put on love@AOL. I decided to put one up too for more laughs. I titled it Art girl seeks sci-guy because after 4 years of art school I was done with artists. Among all the responses was one that asked if a behavior analyst counted as a sci-guy. It was both sincere and made me laugh so after emailing for a month we met. Our first date was seeing You've Got Mail, and we've been married for 21 years.

I was home from grad school for the holidays and on a walk with my parents. We ran into a local grad student they knew and they introduced us, and suggested that the guy be in touch with me about career prospects (I was working in his field at the time). It was all very charming and we parted ways with smiles all around. A block later my dad turned to me and goes 'That's a good meet cute, right?' Anyway, I never dated the guy *but* I did assist his job search and his career is going great. Oh, and the job he ended up getting moved him to the city where he met his wife, so either way, I think my dad gets credit for either engineering a meet-cute or assisting one.

Back in 1992 my best friend and I both got into the same med school. The day before classes started, I had a panic attack and dropped out. The next February, my friend came to visit and ski with the guy from her class that had been on the wait list and got my spot at the last minute. He and I instantly clicked; we dated long distance for 3 years. He was instrumental in helping me decide to reapply to med school and become a doctor. Our romantic relationship didn’t last, but I’ve been in practice now for 22 years, thanks to his relentless support then.

San Francisco. 1992. New Year’s Eve. I had a friend who started hooking up with this guy named Keith from Detroit. Keith and I met, and this being SF, he had a dream that his housemate and I got married. So they set up said housemate, Tom, and I. We didn’t twig. But Tom asked me out a couple weeks later, and I said yes. Our first date was at this hipster bar called The Right Spot. He spilled his vodka tonic into my lap, and figured he’d never see me again. Silly man. We’ve been together for…29 years, married for 21. Guess Keith from Detroit knew his sh*t….

Sorry I missed the meet, I was on childcare duties as Hubs was in Claridges having afternoon tea with my MIL - scones tea and champagne - the works (for her 70th). I’m not even making it up to sound like we are super English or something. 🤣

Sarah @afternoonaasks

Wow that’s an amazing story! Was he famous/and or rich then? 🤣🤣

In the romance dept, I was on the second leg of a three-leg flight to India. I walked onto the plane already a bit tired but feeling sassy. Saw this gorgeous man in the aisle seat next to my open seat and declared "Well! Looks like it's your lucky day!" as I sat down next to him. He laughed and said, "Just might be." We ended up talking for hours and...making out in the dark while the rest of the plane slept. We left without exchanging numbers or anything. I only knew his first name. A week later, I got an email from the airplane mystery man who had spent hours and hours scouring the internet trying to find me based on the details he remembered from our chat. He'd found an old blog I wrote about fruit and used the "contact me" form. While he lived in London and I lived in San Diego, we became penpals for two years. He was hesitant to give me his last name or any info about himself. No video calls, no phone calls, no meeting in person, just email. I figured he was either famous or rich or a spy. I didn't know. Then one day when I was traveling for work again, I had just arrived at my hotel and he messaged me to head to the lobby. I thought he might have sent flowers, but there he was!!!! We ended up long-distance dating for the next year. Super romantic.

I have a work meet-cute of sorts. At my company there were two big buildings with identical layouts except! The mens and womens bathrooms were swapped in the buildings. So I was in the more unfamiliar building for a meeting and I accidentally walked into the men's room and ran straight into a 6' 3" man on his way out. It was....awkard as we both stared at each other with puzzled faces until I realized I was the one in the wrong. I scurried away and did my business, slightly late for the meeting I was heading into, which turned out to be led by....same guy. ACK. Later that guy became my boss. Fun times.
