K-drama Inspired Food Cravings

Yeah, I'm here for the story in dramas. . .the characters. . .the plot twists. But I'm also HERE for the food porn. There is so much good eating and I always end episodes wishing someone would come feed me!

What is a dish you want to try? Or a food you sought out because of K-drama?

The first one that comes to mind for me is tteokbokki. I found it at a mediocre place here in Santa Cruz, but had a hunch there were better offerings. Once I trekked over the coastal hills to Silicon Valley. . .oh yes. I discovered what I was looking for, but going to Korea Town in LA has been my favorite tteokbokki to date.

A food I'd really love to try is bungeoppang (fish-shaped cakes stuffed with sweet red bean filling).

So yeah. . .let's make each other hungry.

I love those spoons!

The pizza product placement was hilarious. I felt like THEY were laughing too which made it even better

The images of kimchi, side dishes, and ramen make me curious and hungry, but it’s the long handled Korean spoons that I’m in love with (here's what I'm talking about: https://d263ao8qih4miy.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/totm-dramasandfood-letseat3-03.jpg). I don’t know if there’s a name for them, but they’re shown on just about every Kdrama and pair up nicely with chopsticks (full disclosure, I’m still working on how to use chopsticks). I now always set my table with the long handled Korean spoons – they are my favorite utensil!

I'm in San Diego and I think we may have lots of options. I'm ready to become an expert! :)

I know this isn't your question but I don't feel I can let this thread scoot by without a mention of that Hometown ChaChaCha Dominoes Pizza commercial that was basically plopped right into Chief Hong's living room. It was such a funny scene. There had been soooooo much good food in that show and then THIS. Didn't make me want pizza, but just...pure delight. I laughed so hard at them.

Becky

So funny this popped up. I ended up tracking down my local Korean market and food just this last weekend while I was watching Healer. Pickled radish!!!!! YUM.

I’m always hungry for something noodley when I’m watching dramas mainly ramen. Though I’m sure Korean ramen is way different from American ramen. I would not be able to handle the spicyness my heat tolerance is extremely low!

Kate

Ahhh I’d love that!! Though the best Korean places are technically in Surrey, near the Samsung factory in New Malden. I’ll be heading down there later this spring as my two worlds collide and we are hoping to get a Korean Local politician elected there for my political party. We’re gonna knock doors for him then he’s gonna take us out to EAT - can’t wait!!!

Next time I come to London, I want Sarah to show me the best Korean places! Also just wanted to link this great instagram account here. She makes amazing-looking Korean dishes! I mentioned her in a podcast that already aired or is airing soon. https://www.instagram.com/hipfoodiemom1/

Same. Whoever handled the food in that CRUSHED the assignment

Last spring, 2 Days 1 Night did a spring special where they had a flounder and mugwort soup that you can only get around March and apparently it's not easy to find. They practically had a religious experience eating it so I'd really love to try it someday. It is regional to Gyeongsangnam-do. It's mentioned in this article: https://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/2016/04/15/etc/Experience-the-taste-of-spring-before-its-gone/3017607.html

So I just saw the BTS YouTube clip with the fish pastries(bungeoppang) on the snack table and found this article with more info https://metro.style/food/features/vincenzo-bungeoppang/29861 So, similar to Japanese taiyaki, which is sea bream shaped rather than carp shaped. If we are being detail-oriented😉

Japchae is soooooo good!!

Jodi Guira

I need to check out that book, because as a vegetarian with shellfish allergies everything looks like it would kill me lol. Although fried chicken and beer scenes fo make me miss fried chicken sometimes and I never even liked it when I did eat meat lol.

Elizabeth

I just started working my way through a cookbook from The Korean Vegan - which I started following before Kdramas hooked me. The soondooboo chigae was something I didn't even realize I wanted, looking to make cucumber kimchi (reply 1988) or japchae (run on) next. After that, wondering if I can figure out how to make the gimbap balls from I Am Not a Robot...

Hannah

Hehehe ...Junho in Wok of Love😍. I have eaten the fish shaped pastries in Japan; my brother who lives in Yokohama says there will be the "roasted sweet potato truck" coming around the neighbourhood, sort of like the popsicle/ice cream truck that comes around in the summer here (Canada). Also, my brother and his Japanese wife often eat fish etc and rice and vegetable dishes for breakfast. Bread or sweet pancakes a treat for them. In my city I discovered several good Korean restaurants and I love the vegetable pancakes (jeon?) and japchae. Bbq is delish too. And soju....

Oh and also first drama CLOY I was totally sold on the BBQ Olive product placement of fried chicken. That chicken looked INSANE
