I guess it depends on the scandal but generally I find many of the Korean entertainment scandals to be kind of odd. I know that I’m looking at it through an American lense but I just can’t believe something like a bad breakup or possible bullying could completely destroy a career. It seems very toxic but I guess the same can be said for Hollywood too.

2021-10-20 15:54:49 +0000 UTCI’d agree with Elizabeth on this, it depends on what the scandal is about. This is a personal relationship and things can get messy between people - that’s the reality of life - And if you split up with someone they will have a view of who you are which is not necessarily who you really are (but also we’ve all been dicks to people) — for me, I nearly always try separate the actor from the character anyway, so my HCCC love is for Chief Hong primarily, which is intact! If the scandal is about their bigotry or say JK Rowling and her views on trans people, then this does bother me and it will alter whether or not I watch/read their productions. I feel bad for everyone involved in the production though that they chose this specific time to air all this

2021-10-20 15:53:56 +0000 UTCThanks everyone for your thoughtful responses! And please continue to share and engage. I just wanted to acknowledge that Kdrama (and/or Kpop) is our happy place and provides some excellent escapism. As such it seems pretty reasonable to have all sorts of feelings when stories like this happen that pull us out of the clouds. We’re actually planning to do a Start-Up recording tonight and have HCCC on the docket. We also need to reflect on how to explore the stories and characters so many people connected to while also acknowledging that this accusation is out there and impacting people’s experiences. —Lia

2021-10-20 14:06:35 +0000 UTCI really loved Start Up and Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, but I can’t say that Kim Seon-Ho scandal didn’t leave me with negative feelings…had this come out prior to me watching either dramas, I probably would have avoided them. I think that people need to be held accountable for their actions and we can’t separate the actor from the role that they play. While I understand that people think we should take media news with a grain of salt, I tend to think we should believe women who dare to come forward. We’ve learned about Marilyn Manson’s abusive nature…can we separated the man from his music? Should we continue to look past deeds and support these entertainers for our own enjoyment and entertainment? I think the only way that we, as members of the general public, can help make lasting change in these industries is to boycott the entertainers enacting abuse and believe the people who dare to come forward.

2021-10-20 13:34:38 +0000 UTCAnd now more is out about KSH and an apology.....so, now I wonder about which "news" outlets to do with Korean entertainment are reputable and how much of a translation is interpretation, etc.

2021-10-20 13:34:00 +0000 UTCI feel similar and try to remember that much of what we see in entertainment news needs to be taken worth a grain of salt. We don't know the whole story, things are twisted all the time and ultimately the rumor mill is perpetuated by people who just want to make money off of the kpop idols and actors. That said- I did fall down a rabbit hole on youtube of videos that ship #taekook and don't feel great about myself for that.

2021-10-20 12:53:35 +0000 UTCI second Elizabeth’s sentiments. I enjoy KSH as an actor and people’s personal lives can be messy. Far be it for me to make an absolute judgment of someone character based on just this.

2021-10-20 04:40:14 +0000 UTCSo far I still watch them in a series. I wish people didn't start rumours/believe fake news/jump into cancel culture without actual proof/rush to judge or pile on......but there's the internet for you! Am hoping tho that Kim Seon Ho is shown to be not that asshole and gets back on track....

2021-10-20 03:40:48 +0000 UTCIt depends what the scandal is. If it's something I find morally wrong and/or am opposed to, probably (racism, misogyny, bigotry, anti-LGBTQ behavior, etc). If it's something that they did as a kid, or something that is totally normal for anyone who isn't an idol, probably not. Also, if it's something that should have stayed between two adults in a relationship and was weaponized in order to hurt someone's career or as revenge, nope. It won't impact me at all.
