The Captain's line about "tired TV producers" is an interesting one. In the original radio script for this episode, Douglas Adams had written "Tri-D TV producers", i.e. 3D TV. However, one of his secretaries mistyped it and Adams thought it was an improvement, so it was left in.

The TV series is low budget by modern standards, but I think it perfectly conveys what Douglas Adams was trying to say with regards to the fallibility of humans. The ending of the TV show really hit a raw nerve with me when I first watched it, and even though the radio series and books go off in a different direction, this version is my favourite. I would recommend the books as they expand on the universe. Avoid the movie though, as it completely dumbs down the point of the story (in my opinion).

The TV series follows extremely closely, and with much of the same cast, but the original series ultimately follows a different path; in fact there was actually a second radio series, followed by a few others that were adapted from the books.
