Apologies
Added 2024-10-13 20:28:25 +0000 UTCApologies, I'd planned on having OFAH, Porridge, Hitchhikers Guide and Doctor Who reactions up in here already. Schedule changed a bit Friday, cause kids are going to be kids and throw a curve ball.
That said, I know I've talked a lot recently about changes in content and how it's presented on the channel. Y'all are getting the raw stuff off that with the increase in movies. I watched a video from a channel Colin and Samir on Youtube that kind of backs up what I've been hollering the last few months or so on the direction of youtube and why I feel I need to make changes with the channel.
Starting in January on the channel, there probably won't be any videos that are strictly just a reaction on the channel itself. All reactions starting in January will strictly be here in Patreon whether on the free or paid tiers dependent on the content itself. I think at least for smaller reaction channels, there's a ton that are between the next 6 months to a year, maybe year and a half that are going to start getting fucked over by youtube. We're already seeing it with a depression in views and reach. I think outside of those that have 500K+ subs, the channels that are doing strictly reactions are going to start getting hit with copyright strikes more and more. I don't think it's old stuff they'll be getting hit on. It'll be all newer videos regardless of the age of what's being reacted to as I don't think youtube is concerned with what's been done but are going to be more concerned with new content and it's viewability, discoverability and how much of it could conceivably come back on them.
Youtube is going to change the presentation of channels to be more in line with what you'd see if you opened up Netflix, Hulu, etc. Who do you think is going to survive once that change is made fully? It won't be channels that aren't set up to appeal to the classic view of youtube and can make a seamless transition to how things are presented to new and returning viewers. So instead of strictly seeing the most popular videos on the channel with a banner and the layout you have set up. Now it'll be set up to where you see a screenshot of yourself with a piece of the channel description and any series you've got created or your latest video with it's thumbnail with the option beneath to click a button to see more of what the channel offers.
I've already got a vision that I've been working towards with the reactions I have recorded and am currently working on and stuff like the Mad Max review that made it's way on the channel and the video This Election Cycle with how I incorporated the reaction pieces into the video instead the reaction being the entirety of the video. Seeing a video from folks that have been to the industry conferences that showcase the changes that are coming, really cemented to me that what I've been thinking and the changes I'm making are on the right course.
The hardest part as far as Youtube is concerned is the community there. I've gotten told so many times, don't worry about what youtube corporate suits want. However without planning for and adjusting to what will be the new norms, regardless of how many are in your community, if you don't adjust accordingly, you won't be pushed to your community, you won't have discoverability. Which leaves a channel in a position where not only are their subscribers not getting notifications, you're not coming up in their feeds, even if it's in the wheel house of what they normally watch, so you get a channel that is dying on the vine. You also don't get pushed to the algorithim so you can get new people to subscribe to grow your channel and you're left with the option of either starting again or finding something new to do.
The one positive is the fact that going this route, I will have some flexibility to hopefully make interesting content. I'll be incorporating the reactions themselves or sections of reactions into them but it allows me to look at things that can be put in almost a series format. Things like, Were Comedians Funnier Than They Are Now, Are These Iconic Movies Worthy of the Hype, Were Older War Movies More Realistic Or Is It Just Nostalgia, and other similar themes. Things that might have some discoverability and hopefully can appeal to the community itself. IF and this is massive IF, IF I can find a style of presentation for the reactions to movies themselves that puts the channel in the least amount of chance of getting hit in someway, I'll put the reactions themselves on youtube.
Regardless of the changes coming to the channel on Youtube, the only difference in here will be the inclusion of both sets of videos to go along with reactions here on Patreon. This is shit y'all are probably tired of hearing but I wanted to let y'all in here know, you'll finally be seeing the shit I've been talking about for a while now. I'll leave a link to that video as well so you can kind of understand the why. If there's one thing for sure, I always have and always will try to keep a finger on the pulse of things for youtube as a whole so if I need to zig or zag I can but also so I'm not blind sided by things that can sink a channel independent of my own stupidity or laziness or content choices.

2025-02-05 11:58:23 +0000 UTCThat's a barrowload of thinking to take in, but interesting, if ominous, from a YouTube angle. I've always thought of it as an audio and visual archive that corresponds to the text-based Wikipedia. I don't need it to be much more than that, especially given Patreon and/or Discord as options. For YT to aspire to streaming channel capability, it sounds like it's ditching the characteristics that appeal to me. I don't have a great deal of use for many of the streaming channels, based on their declared USP and actual content, so for me another one would just disappear into the mist.
