Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy BBC Series

Comments

All of this :) The animations really add to the charm of it, as does the lack of budget. Red Dwarf is similar, the low budget props and lack of polish made it funnier.

Douglas Adams was a genius. I loved his books, the audio tapes I bought years and years ago, then this TV series. I've seen the movie (I think Stephen Fry is the narrator), but this TV series is the best even though the effects are cheap by today's standards. The Hitchhikers guide itself was done beautifully. I am so invested in seeing this again ............... :-)

You actually ended the episode a couple of minutes too early; there’s a build up to a dramatic cliffhanger. The budget for this was actually pretty big for the time and took money from other shows, particularly Doctor Who and Blake’s Seven. The theme music is an arrangement of Journey Of The Sorcerer by the Eagles - the radio series used the actual Eagles original version. Douglas Adams chose it because it has a jaunty, rambling feel (and most importantly, a banjo).

Glad you enjoyed it Alan, yes it looks very dated much like classic Dr Who but that is part of its charm, Adams also wrote quite a lot of classic Who stories, Arthur Dent was also a punchline in Tennent's first Xmas special when he first woke up wearing the dressing gown and yes I think you would love the books great to have you back.

Three Alans in the room together - is this a world record?

I read the original trilogy in the late 70s, then re-read them so often they fell to bits and I had to buy new ones. The advantage of the books and the radio series (which I didn't know about until later) is that you can imagine your own characters and environments, so the more insane/drunk you are the better. Douglas Adams did go on to write a 4th book, which was not as good, but the 5th was better. The 6th was published after Douglas Adams sadly died and was written using notes that Mrs Adams had, together with input from Douglas' friends, Stephen Fry being an example. I think the six books should be sold as a trilogy because it would annoy the people who get annoyed at that sort of thing.

It stared as a radio series on BBC Radio 4. I taped every episode (sadly lost). Then Douglas Adams Wrote a book. Several series late and several books later eventually teh TV series was made. Interestingly the books and series diverged. The TV series didn't always a follow the radio or books. This measn that you can listen to the radio series, read the books and watch the TV series and enjoy without too many spoilers. The Film loses a lot of the imagination. Some comments in the radio series really messed up the TV series by making some poor visual effects necessary (see Zaphod Beeblebrox). The graphics are actually handrawn animations. Ford Prefect was a name of a car.
