Christopher Nolan makes some of the most visually gorgeous movies of our time. Excellent movie, a great experience, watching this in a cinema made all the difference with the loud deafening sounds of planes roaring above the characters. It proves you don’t need a ton of blood and guts to tell a great war story. My Mum is a strong pacifist, very anti-war, she can’t get through the first 10 minutes of Saving Private Ryan, it’s too visceral for her. She didn’t mind this at all, in fact she likes it more than SPP. I disagree personally, but the filmmaking going on in Dunkirk is an absolute marvel. Like you said it’s all about that existential fear of being helpless, hemmed in by an unstoppable war machine, your home country 20 miles across the sea.

2023-07-06 19:15:25 +0000 UTCThere are certain things I didn't like about this film mostly due to the directors commitment to shooting on location and using limited CGI meaning you see alot of very modern features of the town throughout the film and the shear numbers of people and equipment on the beach is vastly understated however overall it's an amazing story about an extremely important point in history I was lucky enough to meet Dunkirk survivors at the Dunkirk little ships memorial in Hampton a few years ago when I was a sea cadet and the story's they had were absolutely amazing yet chilling.

2023-07-05 00:30:25 +0000 UTCremember my cousin saying that my dad and my uncle Fred who were evacuated from Dunkirk, dropped their coats in the hallway floor and dropped to the floor and slept for two whole days when they arrived back in london. it was the only time my dad ever talked about the war when he said one of his regiment started shooting at a plane that was straffing them and the others told him to stop as it would make the pilot angry at them!! Typical British humour.
