It’s a high blend of the genres, which makes it fairly unique. Each and every one of these genres can encompass sub-genres of horror, fantasy, sci-fi, romance, action, comedy etc. but these are the 4 overarching genres - Shonen anime are targeted towards young males. - Shojo target young females. - Seinen target mature men - Josei target mature women If you typically like power ups, fights, hero-esque anime (Naruto, DBZ, DemonSlayer) then Shonen is what you’re looking for More adult themes like politics, in depth war, gore, sex, philosophy etc. (Berserk, Vagabond, Vinland saga) then that’s Seinen There are often mixes of both/shows with elements of both (Death note, Attack on Titan, Chainsaw man) Shows for romance, relationships, coming of age (Fruits baskets, ouran high school) usually are shojo Shows for more realistic relationships, careers, slice of life (Nana, chihayafuru) typically will be Josei. Similarly, there are crosses of their attributes. Love is War, which Ron and Michelle watched is a romance anime but is Seinen due to its more adult male targeted humor
