When i was 29 I became a stepmother to a 7 & almost 9 year old and they came to live with us full-time not long after me & my husband married. I heard "it's not fair" daily not to mention the amount of times they would say or yell my mame! It was like war every day. They fought constantly, I would let them have a snack when they got home from school but it had to be at the table so they could get homework right after. They would fight the entire time! Then by the time they were in Jr. High they would just lie and say they had no homework! I remember the first password for our dial-up internet was nuthouse because that's what it felt like to me! Lol We all survived and they turned out ok (mostly! Lol), they are in their 30's now. Good luck with your negotiations!!
