As for why the Volstruckers spared Caleb, they loved him once and maybe still do. But yes, I'm pretty sure Trent would see letting him go as treason.

So even if he hadn't helped steal the beacon, once it was known she was sick that was always going to be her fate. This version of the cat Frumpkin is Caleb's familiar, so the spell he did in this ep. (and the earlier one) was probably Find Familiar, it's just this time he had better ingredients for his spell components so the spell lasted longer. My guess is what the "losing his magic" bit means is that they removed the Residuum from his arms. The Residuum is acting as some or all of the spell components for the Volstruckers, depending on the requirements of the spell. Because he no longer has it embedded in his arms, Caleb has to find components to be able to cast his spells, otherwise the knowledge alone is useless to him. Liam paid a lot of attention to components and put a lot of details into how Caleb cast his spells in C2, so this is a reflection of that.
