Catching up on HOD and your reactions.
In regards to your, "How is it done?" question on the TITLE SEQUENCE. This is how I would do it, which is probably their approach and methodology.
1) ART DEPT. & SET DEC creates a sample piece of EMROIDERY and a final design for the entire TAPESTRY in Adobe Illustrator and then output that file as an EPS for VFX.
2) The EMBROIDERY sample is scanned at a very high resolution and photographed in HDRI at a very high resolution (around 6K or 8K) to give samples and templates to the VFX ANIMATORS/TEXTURE PAINTERS to replicate.
3) VFX ANIMATION is probably done as a HOUDINI solution and/or BIFROST (BIFROST is a node-based framework for building fluid effects, internal to MAYA and can be rendered in ARNOLD. BIFROST, in this case, is not the Norse rainbow bridge between Asgard and Midhard!). PYTHON may have been used to have HOUDINI shake hands w/MAYA.
4) Render for 2 weeks.
