ep.6 that was harder than the drywall

After spending the last 7 days battling overgrown tree roots, branches, and prickly bushes, Nick and Jenna reflect on their career as landscapers. They contemplate the ups, downs, and the additional 7,000 sqft of prickly bushes they have yet to clear. Amidst the chaos, they discover some labeled branches, review their expenses, and finally address some questions: Will we alter the roofline? Have we uncovered any new details from the neighbors?

You're doing a great job with the filming and editing Jenna. :-) Thank you for all your hard work.

A bit late to the party but I was just watching the video you made last with clearing all the bushes and it occurred to me (at an unhelpful point in time I suppose) that a machete would probably have been great for clearing the overgrown blackberry and other bushes. You do need to take care and sort of learn the swing but a sharp machete is great for clearing an overgrown yard.

So glad you're saving the clerestory windows with the roof plan. ♥️

What I pay in Las Vegas for contractors vs what I paid in San Francisco is night and day! Availability is totally different too. I think SF is more like your costs. Painful, but so many other things factor in. We did so much more of the work on our own because of costs & availability, which gave us experience & confidence to keep doing more.

Cactus gloves are great for prickle bushed (aka blackberry brambles!) & long handled clippers. I've had to clear my mom's house many times. Be careful of snakes in there in the late Springs & Summer.

If you haven't already, I think ya'll just found your house name....Roman Empire!

So great you found the old photo for reference. All best for you two! 🙌

Those black berries are invasive and all over the northern part of the PNW. My uncle bought a farm outside of Bellingham, WA and the blackberries had covered the 10+ achers and had almost covered the house...and it had not been neglected that long. I think less than 3 years. In the USA south we have Kudzu. That is the tropical prickle bush... though Kudzu does not have thorns... but can grow up to 3 feet in a day.

I actually love this Patreon group of people! So supportive and invested into the success of Jenna and Nick ❤️ thanks for sharing Judith - I love the coloured photo of people in the pool, how fun it’s going to be for them to be able to recreate some of these photos in their own way one day! 🥹❤️

After reading the article you posted here, I found that the architect Fred Hollingsworth has a link to the design of your home. There are loads of pictures and even a book showing his designs. Quite beautiful and innovative. https://westcoastmodern.org/places/challier-house-2/

Thats such a good idea! I’ll be sure to see what else I can find for when we start designing the space.

I do!! Since moving so much and having a small kitchen I haven’t been able to use it. I used it a lot before when I had the space. It’s very convenient if you don’t have a composter outside or your city doesn’t pick it up, you can get rid of your food scraps so quickly with it. I have been to Ucluelet, tofino, Victoria, Nanaimo but haven’t explored much else of the island. The island is so beautiful I really should!

That’s what we have been hearing from others who have worked with the city for permits. I believe it’s the queue that takes that long. But when we phoned they said it takes about 2 weeks, so we are really unsure how long it will take. Crossing our fingers it’s sooner than 3 months 🤞

One of the articles I found after reading the Sun article mentioned the landscape architect was Raoul Robillard. I wonder if by looking at his other work you could gain some deeper insight into how your yard was set up?

Asia

It's here! https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/my-abandoned-home-a-love-story

Can you post the Sun article? Would love to read it. Maybe black out anything that gives away your location? Are you noticing you’ve gotten incredibly fit doing this? It’s like you’re hitting the gym doing a full body workout 7 days a week.

Hazel

Random side question - do you still use your Lomi composter? I'm looking into starting to compost. Lovely article from the Sun! I was recently on my way to Ucluelet (from Kelowna) and as I was driving I was curious where your house might be. Looks like you have an amazing location! Have you travelled to the Sunshine Coast or the island much?

And our backyard is also full of blackberries. Probably 1/3 of the property is blackberries on a rocky slope 😝 But, made for some tasty fresh blackberries in the summer 😊

I'm on Vancouver Island, and my childhood home is also on a rock. So listening to you talk about the blackberries and the rocks was very close to home. I bent our lawnmower blade by hitting rocks soooo many times growing up 🤣

I'm sure you will find things to film while you're waiting for the permit. Whatever you find to do during that time, you will probably be able to film. ❤️ Mosquitos reproduce in standing water.

Just read the article from the Vancouver Sun!!! I am so glad they didn't skew your vision!! Also, BRAVO for not letting TV tale away your dreams!! Any idea why the permit will take 3 months???
