ep.5 we opened a blackberry farm

Two truths and a lie: Nick parties hard in Vegas, we uncover a 12-foot retaining wall, and the engineer gives us a thumbs up. This week, as we wait for permits to go through, we begin work on the exterior of the home and uncover a few surprises. We discuss why homes in BC are so expensive, why we chose to renovate versus rebuild, and end the show with three questions from our nosy neighbors: How much of the home are we saving? What did our friends think when we first bought the place? Are we keeping the small tags on the walls?

If it was so cold why didn't you start fires in the 2 fireplaces you have?

Also idea for the rocky backyard space- maybe someday you could build a little yurt and rent it out on Airbnb if the view is good for extra income orr make a little outdoor forest soaking tub/hangout spot for a little oasis to read!

Thank you for talking about permitting and cost of renovating vs demolishing!! I trusted the process you guys have but always was curious about that :) cool insight

Abby Stephens

Yeah I am pretty sure most of the US requires permits to build. There are some places that you are only allowed x number of buildings on your property, or x type of building. Depends on the zoning.

So interesting to hear about the permit process for building and Renovating a home 🏡 in BC Canada . Thank you for sharing in detail . ❤️

I am think for most homes you would need a permit now a days. Perhaps for a small cabin you wouldn’t need one?

Jenna Phipps

I think he mentioned it was a cab not a Uber/lyft, but honestly she could be working for all of them. That’s sooo cool! I am going to need to visit to see all those MCM houses

Jenna Phipps

Oh good to know!!

We renovated our basement, we had to get permits and inspections. I live in Montana USA.

Alice Wilcox

Not needing a permit in the state is not that accurate you still need permits in the states. We still have inspections and insurance inspections it’s very expensive.

Alexa M

The permits story time was so fascinating and makes sense!!

Nick - was your driver in a white Prius working for Lyft or Uber, or an actual taxi? We had Betty once (Lyft) who fits your description. 😳😱 We live in LV & use Lyft regularly. So many red light runners here! Because our lights are so long. Hopefully the rest of your stay was less eventful. Lots of cool MCM's near the Strip, but nothing quite as grand as yours. And definitely missing that view. Believe it or not some with similar trees! Pine trees in downtown Vegas, who'd have guessed?!

Joanna Adler

Oh wow! That’s so interesting and good to know :)

Awesome podcast , look forward to the updates every Monday morning

The places where you don't need a permit is very rare in the States. Even in super rural areas with totally off grid houses there are limits - and resale becomes a huge drama. And in some cities, just changing out a bad water heater requires a permit. The only reason our last place wasn't a permit nightmare was that we kept it under a certain dollar amount & didn't move plumbing.
