Her fingers tightened briefly around mine, her eyes reflecting uncertainty. “You really wouldn’t force me to choose?”
I shook my head firmly. “Never. I respect you way too much for that.”
She exhaled softly, her shoulders relaxing a bit. “And if I chose to stay human?”
“Then you stay human,” I said immediately. “I promise.”
Her eyes flicked downward briefly, then back up, still uncertain. “And… if I wanted to be like you? If I asked you to make me into a demon?”
I hesitated, feeling a sudden ache in my chest. “Then I would,” I admitted quietly. “But only after you’ve thought it through. Becoming a demon is permanent, Tiff. It changes everything.”
She took another shaky breath, finally nodding slowly. “Okay… okay, I believe you.”
Silence stretched between us again, but this time it felt less tense, more thoughtful. Eventually, she tilted her head curiously, the corner of her lips lifting slightly. “You really care about me that much, huh?”
I chuckled softly, the sound rough with sincerity. “More than I planned on, honestly.”
She smiled faintly, leaning a little closer. “Good. Because neither did I.”
Her face was inches away, close enough that I could see the faint flush coloring her cheeks, the soft shimmer in her eyes, reflecting a mixture of nervousness and excitement.
My heart pounded furiously in my chest, my demonic side quiet for once, simply allowing this human emotion to wash over me, intense and raw.
“Tiff…” I whispered, my voice shaking slightly, “are you really sure you want this?”
She took a moment, seeming to carefully consider her answer, then her eyes met mine again, clear and determined. “Ethan, I’ve been sure about you for a long time. I just didn’t expect this—” she gestured vaguely between us, “to be how I found out.”
“Believe me,” I said dryly, “I imagined a dozen ways to tell you, and all of them were better than blurting it out on your couch while eating carrot sticks.”
She laughed softly, the sound gentle and genuine. “Yeah, not your smoothest moment.”
I smiled ruefully, nodding. “Definitely not.”
She shifted slightly, leaning into me gently, her head lightly resting against my shoulder. I felt myself instinctively wrapping an arm around her, holding her close. This moment felt surreal—like some strange alternate universe where the demon lord gets the girl without a violent clash or dramatic betrayal. It felt warm, comforting, but… incredibly bizarre.
I chuckled quietly to myself, shaking my head. Tiffany tilted her chin up, eyes questioning softly. “What’s so funny?”
“Honestly?” I sighed dramatically, a sheepish grin on my lips. “I just didn’t imagine it’d turn out like this. I mean, this is weird, Tiff. Super weird.”
She quirked an eyebrow playfully. “What part exactly? The demon lord reveal, the veggies and soda combo, or that you’re dating your stepsister?”
I laughed, squeezing her shoulder lightly. “All of the above. I mean, I've confessed this stuff to other people—usually ends with panic and dramatic things. But you, Tiff... this has to be the most chill reaction ever.”
She smirked, eyes sparkling mischievously. “Oh, really?”
“Well, except Larry.” I rolled my eyes, groaning softly. “He doesn’t count. The guy literally found out my identity and acted like a clown.”
Tiffany laughed, shaking her head in disbelief. “Honestly, Ethan, your circle of friends is borderline insane.”
“Yeah,” I conceded with mock-seriousness. “But hey, you’re in it now. Welcome aboard.”
She sighed dramatically. “Lucky me.”
I cleared my throat awkwardly, glancing sideways at her. “So, uh… since you’ve seen my demonic side back at Lightglen, you already know I have, like… horns, a tail, wings, the whole scary demon package, right?”
She snorted softly, giving me a look that was equal parts amused and annoyed. “I know, Ethan. I saw you close-up when you fought that huge demon lord. You were terrifying. Impressive, but terrifying.”
I winced sheepishly.
We sat in comfortable silence again, but there was still something I needed to get off my chest.
I shifted slightly, turning to face her more directly. “Tiff, there’s something else you need to know.”
She leaned back slightly, eyeing me warily. “More secrets? Ethan, seriously?”
“Relax,” I laughed softly. “It’s not as world-ending as the demon-lord thing. But you deserve an explanation as to why I’m not, you know, eating people or draining souls or whatever demon stereotype you’re probably thinking.”
She crossed her arms, looking skeptical but intrigued. “Alright, explain.”
I took a deep breath, bracing myself. “I’m an incubus.”
She stared at me blankly for a moment before realization slowly dawned on her face. “Oh… right. The creepy seduction demon thing.”
I threw my head back dramatically, groaning in exasperation. “Again with the creepy thing! Tiff, I swear, we incubi aren’t that bad.” Then I remembered the real incubus was that bad. “I mean, I’m not that bad.”
She pursed her lips thoughtfully, then her eyes narrowed slightly. She abruptly got to her feet, pacing the small living room. “Wait… incubus. So that’s why you have all these girls following you around? Ruby, Miranda… the others? You are collecting girls.”
“Hey,” I protested quickly, holding my hands up defensively. “I don’t just ‘collect’ girls like some tropey anime protagonist, okay? They’re all my women. They love me, and I love them.”
Tiffany spun around sharply, her eyes intense but unreadable. “All of them?”
I hesitated slightly, scratching the back of my neck awkwardly. “Well… okay, to be honest, Ruby’s probably more obsessed than actually in love. She could go as far as chaining me up in her basement.”
Her eyes widened in shock. “You’re kidding, right?”
“Nope.” I shook my head, completely serious. “Ruby literally kidnapped me once. Had a whole setup—chains, creepy basement lair. Thankfully, demon lord here, so I turned the table pretty easily. But yeah, she’s intense.” I exhaled. “Looks can be deceiving. She’s sweet until she’s sharpening knives in your vicinity.”
“Great.” Tiffany sighed, dropping heavily back onto the couch beside me, eyes focused on the ceiling.
