I smirked, glancing at Puriel. "See? I can be merciful."
She rolled her eyes, but there was a glimmer of amusement in them now. "More like you just got bored watching them suffer."
I shrugged. "Same thing."
Puriel shot me a flat look, but she didn’t argue. Instead, her gaze flickered back to the pathetic trio, all of whom were still sprawled out on the ground like corpses in a battlefield.
Ion had his arms stretched out, looking up at the sky like he was ascending to the afterlife. "Is this it…? Is this… how I go…?"
Darren groaned. "I can’t… I can’t move. I think my legs are broken."
Barry, still face-down in the dirt, let out a muffled whimper. "My soul is leaving my body…"
I rolled my eyes and stood up. "Watch them for a while."
She narrowed her eyes at me immediately. "Where are you going?"
"Give me a minute."
I was about to teleport, but then I remembered—right. I was in the mortal realm. And teleporting here wasn’t exactly something I could just do anywhere unless I wanted to risk getting caught. I let out a small sigh and adjusted my words. "Make it two minutes."
Without waiting for her reply, I turned on my heel and headed off to find a quiet place.
I knew Puriel was watching me leave, probably suspicious as hell, but honestly? That was her problem. I found a secluded alleyway, where there were no prying eyes, and immediately activated my teleportation skill.
Dark energy swirled around me, and within seconds, I was back in my private quarters. I moved quickly, heading straight for my personal stash.
Inside one of my cabinets, among various potions, herbs, and experimental medicines, were three vials of Stamina Tonic—something I had crafted during my free time in the infirmary with my Devil’s Craft skill.
A small personal project, really. I had noticed that a lot of mortal problems could be solved with something as simple as a proper tonic, so I figured… why not? It wasn’t a miracle cure, but for mortals? Yeah.
I grabbed three of them, then teleported back to the same quiet alleyway, making sure that no one saw me appear out of thin air.
Once I was sure the coast was clear, I casually strolled back to the panting, half-dead trio—who were still dramatically dying on the ground.
Puriel was watching them, arms crossed, looking thoroughly unimpressed. She turned to me as soon as I arrived. "Where did you go?"
I ignored her question entirely and held up the vials. "Drink these."
Ion blinked slowly, still half-conscious. "W-What…?"
Darren barely lifted his head. "Is that… poison…?"
Barry, still face-down in the dirt, mumbled something incoherent, which I assumed was another dramatic complaint.
I sighed loudly. "If I wanted to kill you, I wouldn’t waste my time with poison."
Puriel shot me a sharp look. "Not helping."
I smirked. "What? It’s true."
Ion, despite looking like he was about to keel over, somehow managed to glare at me. "You’re a menace."
"I get that a lot."
Darren groaned, reaching out weakly. "If it’s not poison, then… what is it?"
"Stamina Tonic." I tossed one to him, then another to Ion and Barry. "Made it myself. Drink it. Or don’t. I don’t really care."
Barry finally lifted his half-dead face, peering at the tiny vial in his hands. "…It’s blue."
I raised an eyebrow. "And?"
He blinked. "Shouldn’t it be, like… red?"
I stared at him for a long moment. Yeah, it should be red if it was made by mortals. But those tonics were special. Then I pinched the bridge of my nose. "Just drink it."
Barry nodded slowly. "Right. Right. Sorry. Just… thinking out loud."
Darren hesitated, glancing at me. "What’s in this, exactly?"
I grinned wickedly. "A secret ingredient."
His face paled immediately.
Ion, however, was too tired to care. He uncorked the vial and downed it in one go. His eyes widened immediately. "Oh."
Darren watched him closely. "Oh?"
Ion sat up straight, blinking in surprise. "Oh."
Darren frowned. "What does ‘oh’ mean?"
Ion suddenly stood up.
Like, completely fine.
As if he hadn’t just spent the last hour crawling through hell.
Darren’s jaw dropped. "No way."
Ion stretched his arms. "I feel… amazing."
Barry, still not fully functioning, just stared. "Did you just get revived?"
Ion grinned, bouncing on his heels. "Dude. This is insane."
Darren and Barry shared a look before immediately chugging their own vials.
I smirked. "Told you."
Puriel, however, was still watching me closely, her expression unreadable. "That was… surprisingly thoughtful of you."
I gave her a mock gasp. "Are you saying I’m not usually thoughtful?"
She rolled her eyes. "That’s exactly what I’m saying."
I grinned, crossing my arms. "And yet, here I am. Saving my students."
Ion, now fully recovered, threw his arms up. "I take back every insult I’ve ever said about you, Doc!"
Darren, still stretching his limbs, nodded. "Yeah, that stuff was magic."
Barry, looking down at his now fully-functioning legs, let out a soft, amazed whisper. "I was so close to the light…"
I smirked, clapping my hands together. "Well then. Since you’re all healed up… I think you can handle a few more laps."
The trio froze immediately.
Barry shrieked. "NOOOO!"
Ion grabbed his own shirt in despair. "WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS?!"
Darren fell to his knees dramatically. "IT WAS A TRICK! A DEVILISH TRICK!"
I just grinned wider, enjoying every second of it. "What can I say? You always call me a devil mentor, don’t you?"
The trio groaned, still catching their breath, but begrudgingly dragged themselves to their feet.
"C’mon," I said, waving a hand lazily. "Three more laps won’t kill you."
Ion let out a noise that sounded like a dying cat. "You say that, but I think my soul already left my body three times."
Darren dramatically threw his arm over his forehead. "This is cruel and unusual punishment."
Barry just stared at me in betrayal. "Doctor. Why."
I raised an eyebrow. "Do I have to remind you why I punished you guys in the first place?”
