Her jaw clenched, her fingers curled slightly into her lap, but she didn’t say anything.
I let out a huff, turning my gaze back to the trio who were still suffering through their laps.
"Look, I don’t know what you think about me," I said casually, stretching my arms over the back of the bench. "But you love me, and you know it."
Puriel’s head snapped toward me so fast I thought she might get whiplash. "Excuse me?"
I didn’t even glance at her. Instead, I kept my gaze on the park, watching as Barry nearly tripped again.
"We both know it," I continued smoothly. "I’ll say it again—you should stop denying it."
She let out a frustrated breath, like she was debating whether or not to punch me. "That is the most ---"
I raised a hand to cut her off before she could launch into some long-winded speech.
"Yes, yes, I know," I said lazily. "We’re a devil and a goddess. We can’t be together. Blah, blah, the realms would tear apart, the heavens would weep, and the world would crumble into chaos."
She blinked. "That’s not exactly how I would’ve put it—"
I turned my head slightly, giving her a look. "But," I continued before she could argue further, "as long as you and I are here, maybe we can just act normal. You know… like friends."
Puriel frowned, clearly not expecting that answer.
I shrugged. "Something we can’t do if we’re back in our realms, right? Because you and I both know the moment I step back into my underworld kingdom, and you into your divine throne, we’re back to being enemies. But here? Here, we don’t have to pretend."
She didn’t respond right away.
Instead, she just stared ahead, watching the trio without really seeing them.
Her fingers gripped the edge of the bench, her expression tight, like she was weighing my words.
I sighed and leaned back, resting my hands behind my head.
"You looked sad when I said my mission was complete and I was going to return to my realm. Remember?"
Puriel tensed again. But she didn’t deny it. She didn’t say a word. And that told me everything I needed to know.
I huffed again, letting her sit in that silence, my eyes drifting back to the trio.
Barry had officially slowed to a crawl, Darren looked like he was one step away from passing out, and Ion was just muttering prayers to the void at this point.
I shook my head. "Look, I know I’m annoying to you. I get it. Our differences—our cultures, our natures, our very existence—create a massive gap between us."
Puriel still said nothing, but her shoulders remained stiff.
I smirked slightly. "But you don’t need to pretend you don’t care. Not here. Not now. Just be honest."
She finally turned to look at me, her eyes conflicted, like she wanted to say something but didn’t know how.
I just waited.
She didn’t look away.
I wasn’t sure if she was building up the courage to say something real or if she was just too stubborn to back down, but either way, I found myself waiting.
Not pushing.
Not teasing.
Just… waiting.
And when she still hesitated, I gave her a small smile. "If you want to speak, just speak. Just don’t give me snarky comments, I’ve had enough of that."
She let out a soft huff, her eyes flickering with something unreadable.
"First," she said, arms still crossed, "it’s a bit weird talking to you in a place like this while you’re half-naked."
I smirked. "I fail to see the problem."
She rolled her eyes, but there was a slight twitch at the corner of her lips, like she was fighting back a smile.
Then, her expression shifted.
She paused, and when she spoke again, her voice was… softer.
More uncertain.
"Second… I don’t know what to do."
I stopped smirking. "What do you mean?"
She inhaled deeply, as if choosing her words carefully.
"I’m the goddess of chastity," she said slowly. "I have to remain pure."
My brow arched, but I stayed silent, letting her continue.
"Love… for me, is not what it is for you," she said, her fingers tightening slightly. "Love is… a duty. A protection. It’s about watching over mortals, about guiding them toward purity and devotion. Not about… not about this."
I tilted my head slightly. "Not about men and women?"
She nodded. "Not about romance. Not about—" She hesitated, glancing at me. "Not about what you and your kind indulge in."
Ah.
There it was.
I leaned back, casually draping my arm over the back of the bench, watching her closely.
"And yet, here you are, Puriel," I said, voice light but firm. "Having this conversation. With me."
She glared slightly, but there was no real fire behind it.
"I don’t know how to act," she admitted, her hands clenching in her lap. "I don’t even know how to think about it."
I watched her carefully, letting a smirk creep up my lips again. "Because I mess with your head?"
She shot me a look. "Obviously."
I chuckled, but she wasn’t finished.
"You…" she exhaled slowly, as if even saying it was difficult. "You sleep with a lot of women."
I held up a finger. "Correction. Servants."
She visibly cringed. "Right. Servants."
I chuckled again. "Is that what bothers you?"
She furrowed her brows, looking more frustrated than before. "It’s not about what bothers me. It’s about what I’m used to. You think with your devilish logic, while I think with mine. Trying to bring those together is… impossible."
Her words hung in the air, and for the first time in a while, I let silence settle between us.
She was right, in a way.
She and I came from two completely different worlds.
Different realms.
Different fundamental beliefs.
But…
I smirked slightly, tilting my head at her. "You’re still here, though."
Her lips parted slightly, but she didn’t say anything.
Didn’t deny it.
Didn’t run away.
And that told me everything I needed to know.
