I didn't BECOME an artist. I just always was and got distracted periodically. I finger painted with reckless abandon. I aggressively demanded to be showcased on the fridge. I studied art through school and even got a degree all in art art art.
And then?
I got a "good" job. Wait what? Yeah exactly. I didn't know that art could BE a job, let alone a good one. The only examples I had were the rare and gifted few who were showing in big galleries and I had no idea how to go about doing that. I also thought the only way to be a successful artist was to be an unhealthy person which didn't sound fun OR sustainable. I thought that being unhealthy and tormented was where good art came from. What a dork.
Now that I get to do this for a living, I've learned a lot more about what we can actually mean when we use that word "artist" and just how very healthy and rewarding it can be as a career.
It's awesome. I'm so glad I found my way back.
Tell me. What did you want to be when you were six? What did six-year-old you think was the coolest job in the world?
Happy May you beautiful people.
