Excerpt from 'Illicit Alliance' -
From here we could see the finger-lakes of rice patties and little farms carved into the terrain, the fields of red and green that stretched beyond- poppies, all of them- until they abutted against the glittering shoreline and red-rooved manor homes of the Rohkash clan. And further still, moored in the marina, the behemoth galleons we’d come here to find. As well as many, many other beautiful ships, large and small.
I glanced briefly at my canine companion to see, just as I’d expected, that same look of awestruck wonder I’d seen on his face when we’d set out to sea from Dokuro. It was the only moment you ever caught him looking… innocent. Younger. Overwhelmed, in the best sort of way.
I’d imagine it’s exactly how I looked, every time I stared out to sea. Or beheld a new shoreline, a new corner of the world I’d never seen before. I knew that look. It was what you’d get if you cracked open any true sailor’s chest and distilled their heart.
He caught me looking at him, and instead of awkwardly glancing away or glaring at me he just… smiled. Something moved between us. An understanding.
I couldn’t help but smile back.
