Song Breakdown: Elisa Lam

Introduction: The song Elisa Lam explores the haunting and mysterious case of Elisa Lam, a young woman who tragically died at the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles in 2013. It incorporates references to the elevator game, a paranormal ritual involving the sequence 4, 2, 6, 2, 10, 5, 1, which parallels Elisa's erratic behavior in the infamous elevator footage. The song also aims to raise awareness about her bipolar disorder, highlighting the complex relationship between mental health and unexplained phenomena. To this day, there are no definitive answers regarding the case, which gave me the opportunity to speculate lyrically in the song, as speculation is all that remains. For me, the lingering question is:

How could she have opened the heavy water tank lid herself?

( ℹ️: Notably, this was the very first song Father and I wrote together, making it a literal try-out experiment)

Lyrics and Storytelling:

"It's cold in here, I wanna get out I'm slowly dying could it be I'm in my watery grave? Black water, no quarter. Now I'm stuck in here, screaming 'cause my times running out"

The lyrics emphasize feelings of being trapped and drowning, reflecting both the physical reality and a metaphorical expression of her struggles.

The numerical sequence "Four, two, six, two, ten, five, one" references the elevator game directly, reinforcing the mystery and unease tied to her actions seen in the footage. Phrases like "scratching off my nails," a direct reference to the factual detail from Elisa Lam's case, as it was discovered she had tried to escape from the water tank but could not and "keep on kicking the walls" further highlight desperation and the sense of being trapped.

Musical Composition: The track is built around a dark, atmospheric soundscape, using echoing synths and dissonant chords to create a sense of unease. The steady pulse mirrors a heartbeat, while the vocal delivery emphasizes vulnerability and tension, enhancing the connection to both the elevator game and her mental state.

Symbolism and Interpretation: The song explores the idea of feeling trapped in one's mind, mirroring Elisa's struggles with bipolar disorder. Water imagery symbolizes both cleansing and drowning, reflecting the tragic outcome of her story. The numerical sequence from the elevator game serves as a metaphor for confusion and the loss of control, paralleling her mental health challenges.

Conclusion: Elisa Lam is more than a retelling of a tragic event; it is a powerful commentary on mental health, the dangers of sensationalism, and the mystery of unresolved cases. By intertwining the elevator game and bipolar disorder, the song invites listeners to reflect deeply on the human stories behind the headlines.

it's amazing to see how much work you put in to think through all the details of the song. πŸ–€ I remember when first listened to the song and watched the video, I also started to look into this case and every time I listened to 'Elisa lam' I noticed more and more details of the case integrated into the song - brilliantly done πŸ–€

Truly amazing to see how dedicated you are and Father with the music and how it all comes together to blow our minds. I love it 😁. I have a question though. So umm do you think Father could pop in here somewhere to just say hi or put a 😎? I work a lot and I have to catch up every few days lol.

Thank you, so much, for sharing this. This case has always intrigued me. Went was the elevator footage edited? How did she open the water tank? How did no one notice her erratic behavior? I love how you broke down the lyrics, it really gives this song more depth and adds an eerie layer to this mystery.

Absolutely love the song breakdown. No artist has ever let fans in the way you have Skynd. It is truly an amazing feeling getting to know the way you create these songs. Thank you and can't wait for more.

This was an interesting read! Would there be any way you'd consider adding the full lyrics to each song with these breakdowns so we, too, could explore your thought process a little more as we research each case/song. I think it would be fascinating to be able to place certain aspects of case exploration to certain lyrics.

Thank you for sharing this with us! For me personally, I didn't even exactly consider that the sound could also picture being trapped inside one's mind due to mental illness (which makes sense now as I am actually watching a documentary on that case atm), for me it always made me feel as if it displayed the feeling of "just" being trapped in the tank. No matter what, goals were fully reached with this one..the atmosphere is extra haunting & the final "GONE" scream makes it all so terrifying and final that I feel it in my entire body and it was quite hard to listen to the first few times. It's pure art πŸ–€
