What should the next video topic be!?
Added 2023-05-05 21:41:16 +0000 UTCTime for a new poll! This time I’m allowing multiple choices, so feel free to pick several options. I’d like to see where the general interest lies.
1) This would be an analysis of the way class functions in two completely opposing ways in The Dark Knight (2008) vs. Joker (2019), with The Dark Knight coming from a ruling class perspective that tries to mask class conflict in moral terms, whereas the Joker movie is more conscious of class, subverting The Dark Knight, and presents the rise of Joker as caused by material factors, thereby also humanizing him. I’d also have to talk about The Dark Knight Rises, with its bizarre references to the French revolution. I’m not sure exactly which theorists I’d draw on, but I’d generally talk about class analysis and its relation to depictions of morality and evil.
2) There’s an Italian movie about Friedrich Nietzsche called Beyond Good and Evil (1977) that I’d like to talk about simply because of how bizarre it is. This would be a (hopefully) more fun video, and less theory-heavy. It portrays Nietzsche as being a lot more sexually active than he probably was in real life, and also as a closeted gay man. I could also use this as an opportunity to talk about Nietzsche’s sexual life, and the debate around whether he was gay or not.
3) This is another Nietzsche movie that I’d like to talk about, an American one - When Nietzsche Wept (2007), based on the novel by Yalom. Honestly, I’d like to talk about it just because of how funny it is - really campy acting, awful special effects, weird and out-of-place editing, like a bad 2000s music video. Would be a nice break from the more heavy topics on the channel.
4) This would be a more historical video, like the German Revolution series. Nowadays, domestic terrorism tends to come from the political right, but here I’d like to talk about a period of time in the late 60s and 70s in which left-wing domestic terrorism was common around the world, typically carried out by self-identified “urban guerillas”. From Germany to the United States to Italy to Japan, there were small left-wing groups carrying out bank robberies, bombings, and kidnappings. It’s just a really strange and interesting period in left-wing history. I’d talk about the political make-up of these groups, which was sometimes quite bizarre, and their historical context. In part, these groups arose from despair stemming from the decline of the historical socialist movement, trying to make a change in the absence of effective mass organizing.

2023-05-05 21:57:19 +0000 UTCI think perhaps merging the looks at the Nietzsche Films into a single Video would make sense? Unless you wanted to do an in-depth hours-long commentary on each, I feel like individually there may not be enough to pad out a full script, but together they'd probably work pretty well. Also would be fun as a comparison both to each other and to Nietzsche's actual works!
