Why are Nietzsche movies like this

After watching the Italian 70s movie about Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil, and being amazed at how campy and bizarre it is, I decided to watch an American one next - When Nietzsche Wept (based on the novel by Yalom). This one is almost so bad it's good. Extremely campy acting, dream sequences with awful special effects, and some of the most ridiculous editing I've ever seen, with out-of-place jump cuts, speed-ups and crossfades that look like something out of a bad 2000s music video. It would be a lot of fun to cover this movie on my channel sometime, and maybe a series covering and evaluating every Nietzsche movie out there.

Haven't read anything from him before, but if I did a video on this movie I'd read the book and perhaps talk about my thoughts on it

Curious to hear your thoughts on Yalom’s work??

Sam Bernad

Thank you, I didn't know about these!

I guess it is a good opportunity to talk about other movies about philosophers or philosophies explicitly talked about in movies in the future. Since you want to watch other movies about Nietzsche and as a Brazilian I can’t avoid talking about Brazilian things, from my knowledge there are some Brazilian movies about Nietzsche if you are curious. One movie is called, O Martelo e a Coroa¹ (The Hammer and the Crown), that it is still in production, if it will ever be released, was crowdfunding some years ago, it’s a “fictional story” inspired by a “true story” of a meeting and then friendship and exchange of letters between Nietzsche and the second and last Brazilian emperor², Don Pedro II. Dias de Nietzsche em Turim (Days of Nietzsche in Turin)³, a movie from 2001 about like the title implies the days of Nietzsche in Turin, where he wrote some important works, without dialogue and narrated by quotes of his works, I guess it has some “arthouse” vibes to it, I still have to watch this movie later. Meu Amigo Nietzsche (My friend Nietzsche)⁴, a short film about a young boy who finds a book from Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, dropped on the dumping ground while chasing a kite and following other colleagues after school, starts thinking about things he would never think otherwise after reading. A good and funny little film, just 15 minutes with English subtitles, link below. ¹ https://www.catarse.me/omarteloeacoroa https://www.instagram.com/omarteloeacoroa/ ² https://aventurasnahistoria.uol.com.br/noticias/reportagem/um-encontro-inesperado-o-dia-em-que-nietzsche-conheceu-dom-pedro-ii.phtml ³ https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0297856/ https://youtu.be/ko0sgE3P-3I ⁴ https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2705260/ https://youtu.be/FroyMvgYfm0
