Warlock: Book 2 - Preview Chapters

Here are the first preview chapters of Book 2 - about 14000 words, so 10% of the final book.

Please keep in mind that this is before I've done my final revision passes, so it's been proofread, but isn't final. I have an annoying tendency to say things three or four times over the course of a chapter and wind up having to revise most of the instances out. :)

Also, this says it starts with Chapter 2 -- I'm not hiding anything, it's just an artifact of my writing software. :)

I hope you enjoy it.

Sometime next week will come another scene courtesy of our Smut Masters, and next weekend another preview that will either be the Prologue, Epilogue, or an Interlude for Book 2.

Happy to help. Let me know if there is another place you would like this kind of feedback. Absolutely enjoyed it and that stood out to me when I went for my second read.

Jason Becker

Yep, that's my bad. Thank you. :)

Not sure if it is something you want to change or not but at the beginning when they are at the coffee shop Morgan immediately gives Noah a hug, however when they are at the subway he thinks to himself that she is very against hugs. This could just be him being oblivious to the fact that she wants to hug him and not everyone on earth and not a continuity mistake. Just thought I would mention it just in case.

Jason Becker

Morgan is awesome. Great job, looking forward to more.

That's for sure! Lots of different kinds of masochist as well. One of my partners is an emotional masochist. Their fun doesn't involve pain—it all about feeling fear and helplessness. Playing with them involves crafting the vibe that they are helpless and at the mercy of a cruel and sadistic villain... while carefully respecting their limits and avoiding accidently causing any kind of physical pain. My other partner nopes out immediatly at anything that makes her feel helpless, but she loves pain. Two masochist, but everything about what they want to experience is completly different. It feels like you're going for a free-flowing dynamic where Sam enjoys chosing to step into a submissive role much of the time, but doesn't stay there when she doesn't feel like it. (That's not a complant, of course, it's a very relistic dynamic)

Mason Nyx

Thank you. :D

Daniel Kensington

Thank you - I'm glad you liked it so far. :D What you describe is one of the reasons I decided to include some D/s dynamics in the story - most of what I found in other works was either so tame as to be just playing around (nothing at all wrong with that) or so extreme a viewer in a public dungeon would start calling mayday. I wanted to, aside from the magic, represent what real people interested in it do. Along with the questions two people new to that dynamic would ask of themselves and each other. I think a lot of people who've never been in that lifestyle just don't understand how rare masochists are, and how for most who enjoy the activities, it's not about 'pain' it's about layering sensations so that it's no longer pain. People who run and get a 'runner's high'? Baby, you're sucking down the same endorphins as someone over a knee. :D

I figured I'd wait a bit for others to read the chapters before posting my more detailed thoughts to avoid spoilers. First—I can't even describe how happy I am to read something in this genre written by someone who has a real understanding of kink. Far too many authors don't have even a slight understanding and don't bother to research it at all. For example, the sadly high percentage of authors (especially in anime, light novels, and anything else touching on the harem or litrpg genres) who believe that a masochist would feel pleasure instead of pain in all contexts. Every time they do something like "I'll make the paladin a masochist so that being wounded in battle makes them so horny they're begging the MC to f**k them, even though they are bleeding to death!!!" I die a little inside. 😭 Then that rare author who does understand comes along... All the little things—like Sam's reaction to Noah grabbing her hair—are a breath of fresh air. 😁 I also really enjoyed how bad Mel and Sam were at hiding the fact that they're not mundane. They hid magic itself (mostly) well enough, but even a mundane who's never celebrated Christmas would have more of an understanding than they have. Their comments make so much sense in the story's context while raising all kinds of questions in the back of Morgan's mind... and that's before adding Felicity to the mix. Morgan knows something odd is going on, but doesn't know exactly what. I love the line being walked here. And, finally, the characters and their interactions were just as amazing as in the first book. You've done an outstanding job of making them feel like real people. Real friends. The opening chapters didn't go as I expected, and I couldn't be happier.

Mason Nyx

Yea, you'll be fine in your new career.

Alexander Taylor

Great stuff. So it will be interesting to see if Morgan has a future sight talent or if there was something else going on with those gifts. I have a feeling the matching necklaces and sculptures are going to become something all the coven members end up getting.

Jason Becker

Thank you - I'll bring the bit that addresses that forward. Even Mel's glamour isn't permanent and it can be broken by too many questions, so even if she glamoured everyone in the home, they'd eventually remember and then question why they'd not been concerned. Or the police, with reports and databases and such -- they might be glamoured after questioning Noah, but something would likely break it, making for a worse situation later.

Daniel Kensington

Thank you for the fix.. I mean chapters

Brian McDonald

Just mainlined the first book this weekend and now with these I’m all caught up. Need more! Great characters.

Michael Pokorny

Oh wow, both Noah and Felicity vanishing on Morgan. For some reason I had assumed Felicity was still making trips to see Morgan in my head. No wonder she was having a rough time, can't even blame the new guy for all of it. Great set of chapters and given the Christmas theme I am glad we didn't have to wait until after said Holiday for them. Thank You.

Jesse

Great start. In the back of my mind I wondered why Mel couldn't have magiced things to get Morgan to her custody. From a storytelling standpoint, I can see why not. But it pulled me out of the story a little. Perhaps Noah asking Mel about that and Sam reminding him that he knows nothing about magic and that witches can't meddle like that without risking the structure of the Veil.

Richard Cartwright

not how i thought the Morgan issue would be handled

James A. Murphy

Great start, loved the curve ball Felicity threw in there.

Todd King

Great start, looking forward to the book!

Jim Payne

Excellent beginning!

ryan

Seems like a great start. I wonder if things are going to progress more later on. The hints are great.

David Mace

Loved the chapters, thank you!
