My guess for the dizziness scenario would be that "Striking the ear with a cupped hand sends a shock wave down the ear canal which ruptures the tympanum and shocks the delicate inner ear mechanisms, producing severe pain, dizziness, and unconsciousness." which is why his vision blurred and he fell over. So my slightly educated guess is in the split second we missed he open palmed slapped his ear to create this effect. No clue if I am right but that is all I got!
