BTS: Boys n' Battle Reaction

Comments

Ah, gosh. The braids. They stopped doing that. Yes, it was cultural appropriation and a bad choice. BigHit was actually the first kpop agency to make classes on culture mandatory for their idols around 2018 when it became clear that BTS was going global (to this day there are kpop agencies that still style their idols with cornrows unfortunately, even in some songs and music videos coming out - DO NOT watch the All Day Project if you want to be spared), but you gotta remember those kids (I mean BTS) were basically raised in a dumpster behind a building and had no expectation of ever offending anyone as they had no clue people in the US would even watch them, nor did they know it could offend anyone. RM has spoken about this a bit - he's said he used to see things on American TV and his understanding was that they were cool and talented and he wanted to be like what he saw as a kid - the understanding of respect for culture came later, but they had limited understanding of appropriation for some years. Asian culture doesn't have much of that type of sentiment - at least not to my knowledge, they don't start out with that understanding. Today, all idols coming out of Hybe/BigHit take mandatory cultural sensitivity classes so they understand things like appropriation, etc, but of course BTS didn't have any of that. They don't do anything like that anymore, though. The closest thing would be V trying on a durag on a livestream in 2023, and he put it on because: 1) It was a gift from Lil Uzi Vert to him, and 2) a fan asked him if he knew how to put it on and he demonstrated it. Some fans did get offended, but I feel like if you are gifted something from another culture that it's very different from appropriation, just my opinion. As for Suga - honestly, no idea. Crazy stylist that day trying to make them boys look 'more hiphop' and he didn't know what to say maybe? This battle took place in 2014 - he's mentioned before that they expected that to be their last year as they weren't making enough money and expected the label to go under. Easy to say 'yes' to things or be more accommodating to things your label pushes when you're about to be fired and then fade into irrelevance, maybe.

Tbh I find this whole live "battle" thing quite cringey and the outfits too. The only part I enjoy is J-hope & Jimin dancing and Jimin ripping his shirt off.
