The awesome spiritual sequel to Castle Crashers

In 2008, indie studio The Behemoth released Castle Crashers, one of the greatest beat 'em up video games of all time. Fans have been pleading for a sequel to the colorful, scatological medical fantasy ever since, while the designers have focused on a variety of remasters and fascinating genre experiments.

Unsurprisingly, another developer has attempted to fill the void. Exalted Studio's Big Helmet Heroes feels a LOT like a 3D, Unreal Engine reimagining of Castle Crashers. Though with far fewer poop goofs.

The Resties share their thoughts on playing the two-player co-op mode using Steam's streaming "local" multiplayer features. Then, in the back half, they discuss Butcher's Creek and the complicated history of violent video games.

The Steam NextFest started today and I NEED you all to check out HASTE: Broken Worlds. It's basically a 3D version of Tiny Wings mixed with what a 3D sonic game should be, with incredibly fast movement. I feel like the Tiny Wings enthusiasts will fall in love with this one quick.

Have you guys checked out Sorry We’re Closed? It released late last year https://store.steampowered.com/app/1796580/Sorry_Were_Closed/

Asura is such a good recommendation!!! Kore-san is brilliant and definitely not as well known as he should be!

Daveyzones

Wholeheartedly agree with Wishmaster recommendation!! That movie knows what it is and embraces it to great effect. Plante, you will love it

It's a good thing my subscription is annual, because I don't think a monthly subscription would have survived Russ talking shit about my boy Kiryu 😂 (Posting here because main episodes don't have a place for comments on Patreon)

I would love if at some point any of yall could play Abiotic Factor together. It was a coop experience my brother and I had last year and definitely a game that was looked over by a lot. Was my favorite game of last year. Coop Half Life 1 with survival mechanics but also with search action elements. An Amazing game.

Taylor

I'm eating roasted peanuts with chopsticks rn and I think I have to admit Russ was right.

Chris, you're such a tease. Will you tell us the game that you were referencing in the openinjng when it's finally time to discuss it?

Travis

Playing big helmet heroes with my 5yo is an amazing experience. 10/10 game rocks

Gonna be that pedantic guy and add that what makes a snuff film isn't that it's a video of someone being killed, but it's a video of someone being killed specifically with intent to sell to other sickos. It's why videos of executions or videos that serial murderers save for personal use don't count as snuff films.

If anyone finds this useful. I've been maintaining a playlist on IGN of games mentioned in The Besties/Resties. https://www.ign.com/playlist/ixiandoom/lists/the-bestiesresties-games-in-2025

I was thrilled to hear Monster mentioned. I haven’t really heard anyone else talking about it. That movie stuck I’m with me all year and I thought about it more than anything else I saw. I loved Chris Plante’s description. I got to see it at a small theater in LA last year and Koreeda did a q and an after it was great! I really wish Japanese media had more licensing internationally. I am really enjoying the dearth of Korean dramas and reality shows available here.

Speaking of "Good media getting buried/cancelled because we are all beholden to The Algorithm", I'm still mourning the loss of 1899. The follow-up to the slow-building but ultimately critical success "Dark", Netflix canned it in the first season due to the metrics of "completion rate". These shows are not meant to be binged, require attention, and pay off extremely well, but because not enough people who started it had finished it in the time the algo or the execs had determined to be "enough time" they cut bait. It sucks.

Thank you so much for more recs! I just watched Synecdoche, New York for the first time a few days ago so these’ll be real nice during my continuing existential crisis atm ❤️

YES YES YES to Paradise Killer, revisited it recently and just wow

Stephen Taubner

great recs from Bret! I'd also try Hylics 1 & 2 Paradise Killer Killer 7 Hypnospace Outlaw Antichamber Arctic Eggs And of course 1000xResist

Chris

So I think I cracked the game with the embargo Chris was talking about, and yayyy, I'm glad it's good. (PS This isn't a speculation thread. appreciation chat styles only, so please don't inadvertently put heat on him by revealing what the game is.)

Casey Mitner

Yep!!!

Chris

Hey! Thanks for this feedback. For context, these episodes take a lot of time to create between playing the games, recording the episode, editing, finalizing and publishing. Unfortunately, the ad market as it stands wouldn't support all that work. I hope that provides some clarity. We're extremely grateful for the Patreon subscribers for making this possible in this far more viable form!

Chris

Besties bracket idea. What if you guys did best game of the year. Where you take the winners of different years of game of the years and pick who wins gamiest game of the year? Ruberik idea. What did they beat out - how hard were the opponents

Whatsup Studmuffin

Hey idk how much other patreon members agree with me, but I would love if only the besties brackets type episodes were exclusive and Resties returned to the main feed. Like I said, idk all the background on how everyone else feels or what other concerns y'all may have of returning to the main feed, but i just wanted to at least offer my opinion on it!

Jackie aka Jax

Hey! Are y'all going to check out Keep Driving? Saw the trailer, immediately assumed it was my shit, and boy is it. Essentially a road trip RPG about picking up hitchhikers, hearing their stories, and helping them get wherever they need to go (whether that's physically a point on the map or within themselves). Combine that with party/deckbuilding elements, an insanely good soundtrack, Resident Evil-style inventory management, and a late-90s early 2000s slacker vibe that just feels like a warm hug right around now with the state of *gestures broadly*. Def would love to hear your take on it!

Stephen Taubner

Have you played: - mouthwashing - threshold - norco - kentucky route zero They all have elements of surreal

Bret Scofield

Hi guys! I’m about to leave for a two-week trip with a few very long flights (6 + 13 hour legs each way). I’ve been wanting to try more surreal games, especially in the wake of David Lynch’s passing (my favorite director, rip), and was wondering if there was something good you’d recommend for the trip? Movie suggestions are also welcome :)
