A chill, snowy game to play this winter

The Resties talk about what makes Lonely Mountains: Snow Riders  -- the spiritual sequel to a mountain biking game -- such a tasty treat this season. In the back half, Frushtick and Plante pour the mailbag on the floor and answer your questions!

Just caught up! Thanks for the reccos Plante, and everyone else in the comments! Currently listening to Murderbot, but I've added a few to my Libby holds for when they're available.

not sure about snow rider (sold my deck a few months ago) but I can tell you that the original ran great on deck, pretty sure it uses the same engine/is graphically on par.

Russ's comment about fidelity reminded me of how much I love Control. Control had a lot of clutter, but it was used to create exciting, chaotic combat situations. Why don't more AAA games use destructible environments a la Control?

As an avid skier lonely mountains downhill definitely captures some of the magic of going down a hill. For my two cents what they capture well is when you ski, the first time you go down is always a little timid and slow. And you're trying out all the runs. Then you go back and you do it a second time and you start to get a feel for it. And then you take the chair lift back up and on your third time down you start going "alright let's see what I can do". This game gets me that feeling better than any other skiing game

I’m not a skier, but I ride mountain bikes a lot and can absolutely confirm that lonely mountains downhill captures the vibe really well. The feel of semi-improvising your route, the sound design, the alternation from feeling really slow and serene to really fast and challenging from one moment to the next is all spot on. That being said, these games make me so angry. I love their look and vibe and feel and for the brief moments where the camera is where I would want it to be I love the games…but my god the camera. The camera at every other moment. Trying to be precise when the stupid camera isn’t where I stupid want it is so frustrating, and it really takes away from the mountains sense of being a place when you can’t freely look around at them.

I highly recommend the Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks to any bestie listeners. It's a very entertaining LitRPG narrated by a phenomenal voice actor (Jeff Hays).

If you've got the skill use it

Everytime they introduce a new question I held my breath to see if it was one of mine. All good questions today

Whatsup Studmuffin

hey Chris, can you post the video you mentioned in the show about Overwatch and Marvel Rivals?

I've been considering lonely mountains snow rider, but wasn't sure about steam deck performance. Did either of them mention playing it on the deck? I don't recall if they did.

Dan Cunningham

The chopsticks thing is valuable, I stand with you Russ

I'm waiting for my library hold on this! Can't wait

Chris

Yes!!

Honestly the $80-100 price tag would be easier to swallow if I thought it was Just inflation. But until executives making the crap decisions start facing repercussions instead of pushing it onto the thousands of people fired to make the numbers look good, I’m going to be mad about it. I’ve deleted a much longer rant that would be redundant to reexplain to games journalists about why I dont think most games deserve to be that expensive until we make a lot of other fixes to the average AAA game and the companies that make them but needless to say it’s a lot bigger of an issue for me than my own personal budget for games.

For books, I would highly recommend Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar to Besties folks, very much our kind of thing imo

Chris’ book suggestion reminds me of The Library Book which is also a terrific listen

Kathryn

Hell yeah? No. I refuse to do that bit. But also, have been enjoying digital downhill skiing. Looking forward to this episode.

Master Oogway

Uncle Dr PhilOsophy
