Besties Battle Bracket: Best Console (not counting the games)
Added 2024-09-04 05:42:38 +0000 UTC

What is the greatest video game console of all time? Before you answer that, we have one huge caveat: you can't factor in the quality of the games. We literally mean "what is the best chunk of plastic, chips, power cords, and peripherals?"
Is this the most ridiculous question the Besties have sought to answer? We will leave you to decide.
Rubric:
Which box looks cooler
Which was more innovative in terms of features / UI
Which has the more comfortable controller
Which has the cooler looking controller
Reliability
Which is more portable (if you had to bring it to a friends house)
Tiebreaker: Which name is cooler
Contenders:
Sega Master System
Sega Saturn
TurboGrafx-16
GameCube
Nintendo Wii
Nintendo Wii U
NES
Super NES
N64
Dreamcast
Genesis
Nintendo Switch
Xbox
Xbox 360
PlayStation
PlayStation 2
Question for the listeners:
What is the best handheld of all time (not counting the games)?
The console was under-advertised and SEGA didn't have faith in it.

It really is a sad world we live in. I will ride into a bloody, holy battle with my brother in arms Russ Frushtick as we fight to slay the three demons with huge hands who assault our beloved gamecube controller. But when the battle ends, and fires of justice subsume the corpses of the fallen, growing more frantic and jubilant with the succor of life that it feasts on, I must point my blade of rigtheous justice at the throat of my brother. And as i drive my blade into him and he looks into the pit of ice that my eyes have become and seeks an answer to this betrayal, i will softly hold the back of his head and whisper into his ear "mario sunshine is the best 3d mario." And i will sob, alone on a field of ash and war, for man cannot know one another without knowing hurt

I really think it’d be more interesting to crown a winner from each console generation with their game libraries included in the discussion. The most recent gen would be the hardest to discuss, but I would figure steamdeck would sweep.

I'm late to mention this, but when the Dreamcast launched in Australia, the VMU didn't even launch with it. I couldn't save my games for at least a week (it was 20 years ago, I don't remember the exact time frame), so I played the start of Sonic Adventure so many times.
I still love the Dreamcast, but the launch and ongoing support here was pretty bad.

Biased. Dreamcast overrated …except I never played it so my opinion doesn’t count. But for real, the console failed.

Oh man. I respect the opinions but I think A)gamecube controller is excellent and B) PS3 shouldve at least been in on the table. The ps4 and ps5 didnt really do much, but the ps3 introduced actually accessible internet to Sony unlike the ps2, it was pretty good unlike the wii, and it was free unlike the 360. The ui was slick, it brought Blu-ray to the console world, ps1 and ps2 classics were better than the entire virtual console, ps home was an ambitious and genuinely fun rival to Mii stuff, and while somewhat unwieldy, it was undeniably the strongest console of the gen. For all of its problems with pricing and library and archtecture, the ps3 was the last console that really meant anything without fundamentally changing the identity of consoles like the switch did

Rus is 100% correct about the GameCube controller. It was mega comfortable and intuitive. It was so beloved by players, that the Smash community basically forced Nintendo to make a special interface box for it for the Wii so people could continue using them.
The Wiimote was only interesting for first-party Nintendo games that focused on it like Wii Sports. Playing other games on the Wii with it sucked so much ass.

I was listening to the controller discussions and thought to myself that the SNES controller wasn't that bad, right? So I fired it up and after a few attempts got Mario All-Stars working. An hour in, and I had a blister in my right ring finger.
Ok, fine.

I have no choice but to 100% support Russ's steadfast defense of the Gamecube. The year I moved to the US, I bought a used cube along with Metroid Prime and Eternal Darkness from Gamestop. It was the first "proper" console I bought after only owning a knock-off Famiclone called the Excellence System as a child (I grew up in South Africa, so console availability was weird). Yes, it's a pretty bad console, but man, I loved that thing.
That said, even though I have never seen one in real life, obviously, Dreamcast da best.

Daniel Anderson
2024-09-12 05:20:31 +0000 UTC
This is so frustrating. There's an arbitrary rule about only 2 Playstation and Xbox systems, but there can be SEVEN nintendo consoles and FOUR sega consoles? The master system or the Wii U could absolutely have been dropped for the PS4 at least. The TurboGrafx being included feels like a meme pick at best - why not the Atari 7800? The PS3 is the only console of its generation to not be discussed, and then the switch is the ONLY console of the last 18 YEARS to even be talked about.

Came here to make sure the comments were going to back Russ with the Gamecube controller argument, and I'm so elated to find I was right. EASILY a top 3 controller of all time, and cases could definitely be made to put it right at the top of that list. The Wiimote, on the other hand, is a glorified TV remote. Can't believe Russ was the only one in the right with this argument. Glad to see all you beautiful people are on his side too!

I’m here to make an argument no one else will. The N64 controller is da best, BUT you must hold the middle leg(?) with your right hand so that your right thumb can use the stick. Now, turn the controller sideways and rest your left hand on top to hit all the buttons. Fight me.

I feel like pitting consoles from vastly different generations in the first round kinda cheapens the comparative discussion of the two contenders. I think it’s harder for Dreamcast to be da best if it had to go against its contemporary competitors early on. That said, I enjoyed the episode quite a lot, and I understand that it’s all for fun. I just think that the methodology could be a bit more fair.

Justin, I love you, but Playstation 2 (the sequel to Playstation) is a great name. While I fully understand that it started the number thing and we lost cool names, you must rememebr it was the first to do so, and at the time it was cool as shit. I know you've worked retail, I just want you to imagine someones grandma trundling into Best Buy to get lil Billy's new console for Christmas, and she wonders "Which one is the new one?? Ah, of course, the one with a bigger number." You may not have had to deal with shoppers wondering if the Xbox One S, or One X, or friggin SERIES S/X was the one they were meant to buy, but I must tell you that holiday 2020 was a damn nightmare at the Target.
Also Dreamcast da best.

Russ may die on the "Gamecube controller good" hill, but I'll be right there beside him. The way that oversized A button perfectly holds your thumb, and you can just slightly rock your thumb to one side for B, or up or right for X and Y, it's just magic. He's right and he should say it.

Man I haven’t been so unconvinced by a result of these since New York Giraffe came to tie break in favor of Undertale back in 2015 😂
But in all seriousness this was an interesting episode because without the games these differences matter So little to me. Every console I’ve purchased or received as a gift was because of its game library. Whether it was because it was Nintendo stuff being age appropriate when I was younger, to the order I’ve prioritized console purchases as an adult, it’s always been about the games, the exclusives. It’s fascinating to see what I see as minor details that y’all end up caring about.

The hidden gem of the Gamecube was totally lost in this handheld-less episode. It was the wind beneath GBA's wings. Gave it a direct first party addon to play GBA on the big screen with the Gameboy Player. Also started to experiment with some wacky second screen experiences that Griffin was referring to with the GBA link. Gamecube was the giant robot to GBA's Krang allowing it to play with the big boys.

Not that you asked for it: but my gut says:
1) PS2 - dvd player, backwards compatible and the twin sticks graduated from novelty to necessity here.
2) Switch - portable, modular, brought indie movement to mainstream
3) SNES - elevated home console to begin to feel like a true arcade experience, delivered on the promise that NES made and started the true console wars with Sega that drove console game forward leaps and bounds, set the stage for Sony and Microsoft to enter.
4) GameCube - cheap, reliable, fun as hell, controller was strange for the sake of strange but there is some truth to the mapping being easy to use once you adopted from any other controller.
5) Dreamcast - what could’ve been… but it ain’t da best
Best portable: switch or iOS if I’m being honest. Would love to tool around with more of those boutique handhelds you fellas are always yammering about.

I had the initial thought, but I think it had more to do with the fact that each of the consoles from Xbox and PS never changed much. They morphed and changed size, but nothing much unique like the early console years or what Nintendo continually does.
I agree that the WII U or the Wii could have been taken out to make room for something else though. It’s really the only time they have done something very similar.
Jeffrey Williams
2024-09-05 16:18:37 +0000 UTC
I’m still trying to figure out why there was a speech at the beginning about how they couldn’t touch every console because they were too iterative so Sony and Xbox got two each but they had every Nintendo console? Given the conversation around the SNES and N64 when they came up I would think PS3 or PS4 would’ve been a better choice than either in this battle (if you’re only counting hardware features and not games). Also, if purely iterative consoles were eliminated the Wii U is quite literally the building block from Wii to Switch. The Switch and Wii are better choices than all three.
Ok, I needed to say this because it was killing me. Otherwise I enjoyed the episode.

This is the first bracket episode that made me legitimately get worked up, so from that perspective, it's the best one so far. Great job guys!
Okay, now I have *thoughts* to share.
GameCube controller best controller. It's the only controller where people are still buying and using it today. I don't mean buying a version of it, like the N64 retro controller. I mean there's a GameCube adapter that you can buy for $75 that lets you hook up your GameCube controller to your Nintendo Switch, and it has 4.5 stars on Amazon with over 1200 ratings.
And when it comes to comfort against the Wii, I want you to imagine holding a Wii controller... and then pressing the 2 button. Everyone forgets the 1 and 2 buttons because they were trash buttons in trash placement that forced you to look at your hand every time to press. Whereas the GameCube controller could be operated blind from day 1.
I do have to give the Wii some credit. At one point, you were talking about legacy, and it's easy to think that the Wii's legacy was short-lived given that people aren't flailing around their arms anymore, but consider this. 2 of the 3 current modern consoles have motion controls, the Steam deck and every phone released nowadays have motion controls, and none of that was happening before the Wii released. The Wii changed the industry so thoroughly that we've forgotten what the industry looked like without it.
(Not saying that the Wii's spot should have changed, but just making clear that the Wii clears every console ever on innovation)
I also think the Switch should've cleared the Dreamcast on features and innovation. Again, it's important to consider the consoles in the time they were released, and the Dreamcast VMUs were super cool, but they just combined a tamagotchi and an N64 memory card. That was nowhere near the elegance of a Switch's mobility.
And I do have to give the joycons some credit too. I know, they're prone to drift and aren't very comfortable to hold... but I think you vastly undercounted the social play aspect of these consoles. For consoles, a large part of the appeal is how easy they are to play with other people, and consoles with more controller ports and easier setups were way better for that. And the Switch is the epitome of that, because even though a joycon should never be your first choice for a controller, it's so nice that it's an option. I play with a Pro controller 99% of the time, but when friends come over and we want to play Towerfall, it's great that I can pull those out and we can all play together.
(Also, its size is not that much of a problem for kids, which is who benefit most from having accessible controller options)
And unlike the Wii, the joycons can switch between motion control upright play and sideways controller play a lot easier. The buttons are a lot closer together and I'm never searching all over like I did for the 1 and 2 buttons.
Okay, apparently I had a lot of thoughts. Hope you enjoyed them. Looking forward to the next episode.

Thank goodness there are so many other good, honest, hardworking and probably lovely people here to agree that the GameCube controller absolutely rules and I wish its lessons had been learned. The only bad thing about it was the triggers were maybe squishy.
Otherwise, it felt good, you could navigate and understand it in a tactile way, just a real delight.

The absolute slander against the GameCube controller in this episode cannot stand. It is God's perfect interface for video games. The big green A button tells you "This is how you do the main thing". The B button is smaller and red. It's your secondary/cancel button, you can tell just by looking. The X and Y buttons have their unique orientations so that any on-screen prompt for their function is understandable immediately without having to pause to think "wait is X on top or to the side?". The main stick's octagonal gate gives you perfect access to the cardinal and diagonal directions. The C-stick, ok, it's a little weird but again, on screen prompts never leave you confused about which stick they're referencing. Big mushy analog triggers? Hell yeah, we've got em and maybe a game found a way to use em? The Z-button is great, there's only one of them, you're never forced to remember which non-directional effect got put on which secondary shoulder button. The D-pad is also there! And the colors! Who's player 2? Well, the plug in the #2 slot is green and Christina is holding the green controller so there's your player 2. You don't want a wireless controller because up until this point they've all been shitty IR things that didn't work if you moved your hands half a centimeter? Let me introduce you to the WaveBird and change your life forever.

I know that the rubric disqualifies game conversation but I gotta give kudos to the original Xbox, for innovation, by allowing you to rip your own music cds and grab small clips for the NFL 2k titles, using them in situational moments (sack, 1st down, TD, etc.).
I will never forget the ‘cool factor’ of that.

Russ: I am dying on that hill with you. I loved the GameCube controller and there's no way on earth that the Wii had a better or more comfortable controller. The Wii controller was so lacking that - much like the N64 - it later required an add-on to make it work better.

If the business playing field had been level when the Dreamcast released, it would have blown everything else out of the water. It looked and played way better than the PS1 and N64 for basically the same price, and was the first console to include features that would define the next two generations of consoles. But the Saturn was such a flop that it tarnished Sega's reputation to consumers and developers. They just couldn't get games made for it. When the PS2 was announced everyone just held out.

I can appreciate a good bit as much as the next person, but Dreamcast should have been out in round one. And Chris stating "Sega doesn't even get to make these anymore" should be a huge red flag, because they made a console so much worse than everyone else that they stopped making them entirely.

So happy GameCube made the top 5. Thank you Russ for championing the GameCube controller. So good they still make them!
Scorching hot take: I think the Wii is maybe Nintendo’s worst console. Least memorable games, only has a gimmick going for it essentially. Motion controls ruined every game except Wii Sports. 😳 (might just be jealousy because I never had one)

Opinions for this bracket battle are DEFINITELY age dependent-- born in 1996, I never played the Genesis or SNES so it was funny hearing all four of yall gear up for that discussion that I had literally no opinion on. And Justin simping for the gray hardware style of the 90s is BONKERS since that's always just meant "kinda old" to me! lol

Perhaps some recency bias, but for me the Steam Deck is the greatest handheld of all time. It’s the first time I’ve actually felt a genuine “generational leap” since the Xbox 360, and after a full year it still blows me away every time I boot it up

Coleco Football. 1978. Best portable game (console) ever!
Also, I really loved the Intellivision platform and the game Utopia in particular. Maybe the first real time strat game ever.

Okay, I haven't listened to the whole thing but I had to come in here to say my peace about the Sega Saturn and Wii U.
Ya’ll forgot (maybe I guess I should finish the episode) to mention the cartridge on the back of the Saturn to expand the memory. Making this console the best Capcom fighting game machine of all time.
And then there’s the Wii U.
One of the best features of that console was TVii.
In a world where everyone uses an Apple TV or Chromecast, Nintendo was ahead of the time!

GameCube controller is still one of the most comfortable controllers of all time! The ergonomics made it fit in my hands perfectly, the colors are phenomenal, the buttons had the perfect travel, size, and placement. Idk man, I still go back and use it when I can on the Wii and the switch!

I think this is the bracket I’ve agreed with the most (except PS beating PS2, that’s wild). It’s so funny that the console that literally killed SEGA as a console creator won, but it did have some unique innovations the world just wasn’t ready for.
Also I’m totally team Russ about the GameCube controller. I can’t believe he didn’t bring up the fact that 3 console generations later Nintendo is STILL making GameCube controllers for their consoles (mostly for smash bros players but still).

Feels like ease of game development would of been a handy metric to add in, it would be nice to learn which games consoles with bad libraries shot themselves in the foot vs those that the industry was unfair to.

Naming it the Xbox 360 to go up against the PlayStation 3 was bold, but Microsoft really missed a trick by not calling their PS4 contender the Xbox 420.

You could've made bank over the years shorting stock for my gaming hardware choices. TurboGrafx-16, Dreamcast, Vita...
The list is long and painful, considering I usually bought the more popular competitor later.

Came here to say this! My yellow Gameboy Color was my favorite - my sister had the turquoise one and both were such bold, satisfying colors. I also had a transparent purple worm light attachment and a felt pikachu sticker in the corner haha. From game consoles to cellphones to kitchen applicances, it’s such a bummer that these days most of our color choices are boiled down to black, white or silver, if that.

I'm sad for Saturn. In a universe where Sega Japan treated Sega US as if they were a part of their same business instead of keeping everything secret, the Saturn may have had a chance. there's no getting around its design architecture. It's basically the PS3 cell processor progenitor in terms of development complexity. Regardless, I love that console with my whole heart, and it's games were some of the best around.

*me in my head at work listening to this.
"THE Wii U IS ALSO A WII! HOW CAN IT BEAT ITSELF BUT WITH MORE FEATURES? LITERALLY THE WII U COULD JUST BE CALLED AN HD WII!"
Love the show! Sorry for yelling at you guys in my imagination.

I came here specifically to support the 3DS, the best handheld console. It's a marked improvement over the gameboy advanced sp, the best handheld console by games available... which is to say, nostalgia.

best handheld is the gameboy color, simply because of all the rad colours. can we stop being boring and go back to being indecisive about which kickass colour to get?

I have to say the best handheld ever would be the 3DS. The SP was very popular but the 3DS could play DS and 3DS games, had a great form factor, and STREETPASS. I only own one GBA but I own four 3DS systems (I have a problem)
