Hey everyone, this is a Magic item I made for one of my players on my game, so why not share it with all of you.
This was a weapon that one of my players stole from a magic shop, I wanted to give them an interesting lesser magic item so created this "evolving" short sword that starts with a penalty but may become what counts as an uncommon item.
The idea behind this sword is that its an unfinished sword infused with magic so that would finish making the sword.
Its first form is a very unbalanced Sword, it counts as a magic weapon that gives very dim light and heat around it (but nothing big enough to light or burn anything, its just warm to the touch) and it has a -1 penalty to attacks and damage. If the wearer rolls a 1 or a 20 during an attack with it, the sword will shatter.
Whenever the sword is broken, during dawn it will try to reform itself, In this case, the player will roll a d20 and the DM should consult what form it will take next.
1-9 = Same form, Unbalanced and blunt sword with -1 to attack rolls and damage
10-13= Ranged form (second picture), this form count as a magic sword (no bonus to attacks), it has 2 charges, the player can spend one charge to make the next attack as a ranged attack with 60ft range, spending a charge gives the weapon a -1 penalty to attack rolls and damage, once the second charge is spent, the sword breaks.
14-17= Explosive form (third picture), this form count as a magic sword (no bonus to attacks), it has 2 charges, when dealing damage, the player can spend one charge to deal an extra 2d6 fire damage, spending a charge gives the weapon a -1 penalty to attack rolls and damage, once the second charge is spent, the sword breaks.
18-19= Fragile Final Form (last pic), this weapon works like a Javelin of lightning but deals fire damage instead, after using its special ability the sword breaks.
20= Final Form (last pic), this weapon works like a Javelin of lightning but deals fire damage instead, the sword also becomes almost indestructible.
The sword requires Attunment
Notes: feel free to make changes as needed, if you want to change the damage type, making it a +1 sword on its final form, or change the chances for each form, maybe the sword has to be imbued by doing some side quests and it changes forms that way (so no breaking and rolling), in my game the player is allowed to break the sword by smashing it into stones, but if she breaks the sword by using it in combat I allow her to roll with advantage during the rebuilding part.
No color on the second and final form because my player havent seen those yet :P
