Chapter 60: The Golem's Heart

The morning sun cast a pale, analytical light on the stone slabs, but the air was charged with a tension so palpable it seemed to have weight and texture. The usual murmur of disciples in their morning training had been extinguished. The servants, laden with their baskets and buckets, had stopped at the edges of the courtyard, their movements frozen, their faces a mixture of awe, fear, and an incipient adoration.
The news had spread faster than a wildfire, a whisper that ran through every hall and kitchen: "Lady Xiao Yue has returned."
The carriage, "The Clouded Phoenix," made its entrance, stopping with an imposing grace. The guards and disciples witnessing the arrival kept an expectant silence, remembering the majestic departure.
Kenji descended first. He no longer wore the anonymous gray of a servant, but the robes of a high-ranking personal assistant: a charcoal-colored silk, sober and unadorned, but with a cut of such precision that it spoke of authority. His back was as straight as if he had swallowed a sword, and his face, as always, was a mask of impassive efficiency. He did not step aside as a lackey would. He turned to the carriage door and, in a gesture of formality and respect that no one would expect from him, extended a hand inside.
Xiao Yue's gloved hand, pale and delicate, took his. He helped her down with a firmness and care that transcended simple duty. For a moment, their hands remained joined—a silent portrait of power—before he released her and took a step back, assuming a posture of respectful guard at her side.
Whispers rippled through the courtyard like a breeze.
"Did you see that? She didn't treat him like a servant, but like... a knight."
"Who is he? The Matriarch promoted him; they say he's a genius."
"Genius or not, Lady Xiao Yue clearly trusts him. Look at the way she looks at him."
Xiu Mei's pavilion was a vibrant, living chaos, an insult to the orderly austerity of the rest of the clan. The air smelled of damp earth, spiritual ginger, and the feverish sweetness of the Moon Orchids that grew wild in the cracks of the floor.
They found Xiu Mei humming an off-key tune while grinding roots that emitted a bluish vapor in a mortar. Upon seeing them enter, her amber eyes shone with a feline mischief.
"Well, well! If it isn't my favorite investors!" she exclaimed, setting the mortar aside. "From the looks on your faces, I'd say the shark hunt was a success. Spill it! Did you bring the toys so the artist can start making magic?"
Xiao Yue, a triumphant smile illuminating her entire face, approached. She recounted the success of the auction, the acquisition of both ingredients, and the public humiliation of their rivals. Her voice was a torrent of contained emotion, like a general reporting a decisive victory.
Xiu Mei celebrated with a cry of pure, wild joy, giving a small leap that made her three fox tails stir like flames. But as she did, her gaze fell on Kenji. She studied him, tilting her head, her joy giving way to intense curiosity.
"Hold on..." she said, interrupting the celebration. She walked over to Kenji, circling him like a fox sizing up a strange prey. "There's something different about you... Your silence is no longer that of a machine awaiting orders. It's... quieter. More solid."
She snapped her fingers, the sound sharp in the herb-laden air.
"I've got it! You don't look like a Golem anymore! You almost look... human."
She paused dramatically and pointed an accusing but amused finger at him.
"Kenji," she said, using his name for the first time without the derogatory nickname. "What happened to you? Did my little Phoenix manage to install a heart in you?"
Xiu Mei's direct question, and the use of his name, left Kenji without a prepared logical response. For the first time in a long while, his internal system found no protocol for the situation. Instead of defending himself or analyzing the comment, he simply said:
"Actually, there is something else that requires your attention."
From his sleeve, he produced not a scroll or a data tablet, but a small, austere wooden box. The two women looked at it, expecting it to contain some report or a rare ingredient. He opened it, revealing a hair pin, delicately carved from dark sandalwood in the shape of three intertwined fox tails. The work was simple, but of an exquisite elegance.
He offered it to Xiu Mei. The kitsune's mocking expression transformed into pure astonishment.
"For me?" she whispered, incredulous.
Kenji nodded.
"May I?" he asked, his voice calm, almost soft.
Xiu Mei, for the first time since they had known her, was speechless. She simply nodded, her gaze fixed on the small object.
With absolute concentration, the same he used to analyze a financial statement, Kenji approached her. With a clumsiness that was almost tender, he carefully placed the pin in Xiu Mei's chaotic red hair, securing it among the rebellious locks. The gesture was respectful, almost reverential.
"Xiu Mei," he began, and his speech was measured, as if he had to convince himself with logic just to say it out loud. "I thought about what you said. A lonely summit is simply useless. I have spent... two lifetimes... seeking absolute efficiency. I think it's time to stop over-analyzing everything. Maybe... just live life. While still having priorities, of course."
A small, ironic, self-deprecating smile appeared on his face. It was the first time they had seen such an expression on him.
"Besides, the negotiations went extremely well. Honestly, I'm happy with how things turned out. I put Xue Li in a precarious situation... you should have seen his face."
Xiu Mei touched the pin. Her fingers trembled slightly as they brushed against the polished wood. She processed not only the gift but the value behind it, knowing Kenji's pay was meager and that the object had likely cost him a significant portion of his personal resources. Her amber eyes moistened. The facade of the cynical kitsune, the outcast who hated the world, melted away completely.
Suddenly, a laugh erupted from her. It was not an amused laugh; it was a wild, free, explosive sound filled with pure joy.
"DAMN YOU, KENJI!" she shouted, her voice echoing throughout the pavilion.
In an explosive movement full of overwhelming affection, she threw herself at him and hugged him. It was not a delicate hug. It was a bear hug, strong, that lifted him slightly off the ground and knocked the wind out of him. She squeezed him with the force of a whirlwind, as if wanting to merge her chaotic vitality with his orderly structure.
Kenji went completely rigid, his arms at his sides, his system experiencing a total crash in the face of the unexpected and overwhelming physical contact. His face was a poem of panic and confusion, that of a supercomputer that had just had a cup of tea poured over it.
Xiu Mei finally let him go, giving him a resounding slap on the back that nearly sent him toppling over.
"Turns out you do have a heart in there!" she exclaimed, her eyes shining with tears of joy. "I thought you were just a brain! From this day on, Kenji, you're part of my pack!"
She looked at him, and her smile was fiercely genuine, devoid of all malice.
Xiao Yue had watched the entire scene from the background, a smile of immense pride and tenderness illuminating her face. She felt no jealousy; she felt a deep happiness seeing her Golem learning to forge other bonds, to be cared for by others. To simply be Kenji.
