I don't blame you listening to the opening, the song is goddamn 19 years old and I STILL have it on my playlists. So the two soul reapers are in Kenpachi's squad, the guy with the eye patch. It would make sense why they need to defeat their opponents for glory since Kenpachi is a battlejunkie. Also Kitsuke isn't exactly a legendary mentor, what you saw was him in captain robes. Meaning he was a soul society captain. That would explain why he has a zanpakuto. Now what happened to make him a shopkeeper? Well you will just have to keep watching to find out. However an important detail you missed from an earlier episode, when Kitsuke touched the gate to soul society after everyone ran through, his hand rebounded. So it would appear he is blocked from returning.
