This episode was a total chill vibe. It really made me nostalgic for when I lived in LA.

Sodaheiress

Bret’s disgust at Adam’s lack of song knowledge 😂

Sodaheiress

DEI is the definition of snowflakery and you are subhuman in your retardation for writing this...let alone for existing on this planet

Neil G.

Lmao that screenwriting rant was glorious. 🥵🥀 A piece of art.

Senseless

Ha, ha - was the android in 'Alien Romulous' black?!

Steven Hamilton

The screenplay as fiction question immediately brought to mind Alain Robbe-Grillet’s approach to story telling

Bill Xlinton

I think there are waaaaay more problems with Alien Romulus than the android being black (as someone who hates wokeness as much as anyone I don’t really understand why that’s even woke) and I actually thought he was by far the best thing about it. A frightening and very strong performance in an otherwise highly fan servicy, tame film. The most surprising thing was how the director of the insanely violent Evil Dead remake made such a non violent Alien movie.

David Willis

Please ask Brett sometime if he's seen and what he thinks of The Young Pope (and its follow up The New Pope). Both masterpieces imo and a career high for Jude Law

Ben

Adam, if you're reading, I haven't gotten email notifications for the last couple of episodes (silver level) and it sounds like some others haven't either. Worth looking into.

Nathan Stack

Band went from dark poetry to superficial eighties angst!

JEREMY ROBERTS

Why is Adam so alone in life? No family, no sig other, nothing but his work. What’s his back story? Portland former porn producer is all I’ve been able to glean from the podcast

Happyhead

Agreed. Ian Curtis was the genius. The band is nothing without him.

slimshadyfan666

Joy Division for me. NO? No, sorry. Ian Curtis was the force 😉

JEREMY ROBERTS

Adam needs to skip those and some of the other redundant questions fr.

Thomas Matich

I left the cinema half an hour before the end of Alien Romulus. It was dreadful.

Gnome

I haven’t read Hook’s other book about running The Hacienda in Manchester yet, but from what I read in Unknown Pleasures, I can see the friction that ultimately led to Hook’s departure from New Order.

Ryan Peck

People have made very successful YouTube careers from freaking out about blacks/gays/women in tv shows and films…..

Lionel

Saigon!

Justin Grams

Bret needs to host an X-mas party on Doheny drive this year and invite 👽

Seneca Garcia

I'm pretty sure Petagon Papers was a historical spec script.

Edi Panta

these days you cannot enjoy alien (1979) because of woke.

Oleg

He thought the Alien casting was woke?? That was like the least forced diverse cast there’s been… nowadays we can’t have a black person in something without it being woke???

OSOS

The quick Capt. Willard "Saigon..." when Bret gets annoyed at the helicopter, good Adam bits all around

Max

I cringed at this and I saw it coming the second he mentioned the movie. Literally every Alien movie has a multi ethnic cast.

turtleboy

Bizarre Love Triangle is definitely my favorite song of the 80s. This episode is such a vibe for me.

Detuned Gloom

God I love New Order

Detuned Gloom

I read both of Hooks books… Bernard really sounds like an asshole….but maybe that’s just Hooks slanted perspective….but then again Bernard does look a bit like an asshole…

Lionel

He's a real one!

Johnny Blade

It must be exhausting to see wokeness in everything.

Lionel

Adam's apology is the highlight of my week so far.

Claude Henry Smoot

Is anyone not clear as to what Bret thinks about screenwriting?

Brian Kenna

This is the kind of professional attitude I expect from someone who wants me to buy his product.

slimshadyfan666

I knew that You Got the Touch was by Stan bush, from Transformers, The Movie. I just didn’t have the need to show off this staggering erudition! It’s from the part where Optimus prime comes to turn the tide. Also Dare, from the part where Hotrod is on the fish planet I think, is a good Stan bush song. There, I think I killed my chances of having any friends at this website! The genius of pta to use that, though… Great show to you guys!

Stephen Curry

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

Bret is such a snowflake when it comes to DEI lolll

Anthony Giancola

Interesting article that tracks Mr. Ellis’s observations about the collapse of Hollywood. https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/hollywood-is-quietly-welcoming-trump/

Phillip De Vous

Serious??? I am laughing at how retarded you are, yet how you think you can laugh at me...you don't even understand his stance cause you have no understanding of basic logic 😂😂😂...the fact that you are allowed to live is a crime against humanity, and that's just science, but it's hilarious to me...and what's even more subhuman and retarded about you is you laugh even though you are as retarded as you are 😂😂😂

Neil G.

Well, you’re about the 20th person on these Q&As to ask about screenplays.. it seems Bret’s stance has been conveyed ad nauseam. But for real, what’s the deal, why so serious? 🤣

Thomas Matich

Cool thx .

Binyamin Ironstone

yep, most of them are just blueprints. But, if written with a consciousness, a SOUL, if you will, they CAN be literature. It has nothing to do with AI prompts...in fact, they are the opposite of that.

Neil G.

That's exactly what I'm talking about: the screllice IS a literary screenplay. And, if written with a consciousness, CAN be a radically new way of writing, which is especially fresh today, given how unpopular novels are (and as Bret has acknowledged). I think he STILL didn't quite understand where I was coming from. Even Quentin has never published any of his screenplays as literature; he novelized Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, and he calls them "screenplays as novels", but they are not novels. They are where the succinctness of poetry meets the detail of prose. A distinct medium. Anyway, if you're interested, here is the link to my screllice, Clean Break. A heist screllice set in Los Angeles in 2018: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D6L7DQHV

Neil G.

I think Neel G’s talking about AI prompts - Screenplays are by nature Soulless, Blueprints .. maybe they could use a life

Daniel Keough

Regarding Neil G.’s question, I wonder if he’s talking about the screenplay as literature or an art form unto itself. Stage plays are considered literature. In high school and college, I read Romeo & Juliet, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Death of a Salesman, and Macbeth. We discussed them in class and wrote essays about them the same way we would a novel. I suppose you could read screenplays as literature, but scripts are often changed during the movie’s production. I remember seeing paperbacks of screenplays like Pulp Fiction, American Beauty, and Taxi Driver appearing on bookstore shelves back in the late 90s and early 00s. They were marketed mainly as script templates for aspiring filmmakers, but it was fun reading them and seeing how they differed from the finished film. Are Comp. & Lit. students reading the screenplay for Chinatown? Probably not. Then ending conceived by Robert Towne is drastically different than the one Roman Polanski decided to film. Bret has mentioned that Quentin Tarantino approaches writing his scripts as if they are novels. This contrasts Bret’s attitude about screenwriting, but he’s never specifically said that he disagrees with Tarantino. Also, Tarantino can write his screenplays as if they are novels because he’s Quentin Tarantino.

Billy Schafer

I love new order and love hearing anyone talk about their love for new order. Saw them with the pet shop boys a couple of years ago, both were amazing

Kerry

Wow, I'm not the real deal...so what is that, according to you??? Someone with a low functioning brain that, inherently, should not exist due to the level of subhuman retardation he/she possesses? Cause, around here, that may be valid 😂😂

Neil G.

Yeah, cause when there's so much shite like you on this podcast that has no common sense, what am I gonna do??? Thing is, there is absolutely nothing SCIENTIFICALLY that I say that is stupid or rambling but science and logic mean nothing to a thing like you and plenty of the THINGS on this podcast...and therefore, I destroy you, and you call me stupid because I made you feel terrible...might as well get off this planet cause no one wants you here...no one with a functioning brain

Neil G.

They’re still going through the ones from the posting a while back, and in what order they’re being asked, who knows?

Thomas Matich

He's not the 'real deal' in the slightest.

Thomas Matich

“Thanksgiving turns into Saturday.” 100% my experience in LA this past week. Loved every minute of it. 😎

Patrick

I’m a Platinum member and never get the solicitations for Q&A episodes these days. What gives ?

Binyamin Ironstone

New Order/Joy Division fan here since I discovered them in 2010 (I’m 34, btw). This year alone, I saw the films 24 Hour Party People & Control, read Unknown Pleasures by bassist Peter Hook, & saw Peter Hook & The Light perform live.

Ryan Peck

oh man this neil g fella not only torments us with his stupid comments in the comments section he seeps into q&a with his rambling ridiculous nonsense too.

Oleg

I’m only 28 and new order makes me nostalgic
