Delightful interview. Justine Bateman was one of my teen loves. I will always carry that torch.

Can someone be the designated timestamps-when-the-interview-starts guy

One of the best interviews on this podcast so far. Family Ties was one of my favorite shows as a kid and I never knew what happened to Justine Bateman. I thought she was surprisingly open during the interview, really enjoyed this one.

A telling point, that, about the sometime-disconnect between movie critics and hoi polloi. The power of cancel culture means that the eat-your-vegetables style of movie making is almost guaranteed a pass by the pros. The honesty is one reason this podcast is so refreshing. Justine was a surprise -speaking of refreshing. Computer sci degree? Writing books? Producing? Bless her heart. And her integrity. (But I simply did not get her point about the importance of film festivals.) Regarding the theater-going experience: yes to everything Bret said . . . and yet. It would take a very special film to drag me to a theater. I compare it to books, physical versus digital. How many really command the -what? Reverence?- of paper and binding? And how many movies are being made with the theatrical experience in mind anyway?

Bret - great show. Fully enjoyed the Valley Girl (83) segment. Valley Girl was one of eight movies that defined who we were in the first five years of the 80s. The others were The Earthling, My Bodyguard, Ticket to Heaven, Fast Times, The Outsiders, Repo Man, and Apocalypse Now was the hit of acid. About ninety minutes in, the dialogue with JB really hit it out of the park - those comments on Gen X: the stoicism, the nihilism, the practicality, the no bullshit, the sense of humor and the irony. Yes, all of that a thousand times. I'm 52. My mother was a court reporter who retired after the Jim Baker PTL case. My later stepfather was Dean Smith's CPA. I let myself in after school with a latchkey that was later used to rob our house, my stepfather's .38 found in the woods by a nearby high school. I saw Len Bias play about six times and learned of his death while at college orientation 34 years ago yesterday. Stoicism. Nihilism. Practicality. No Bullshit. Sense of Humor. Irony. Not sure it's defined any more authoritatively than that. Looking forward to the next show. Thanks. JTB

Great ep. More Gen X thriving survivors please!

Remembering Robert De Niro’s character’s name in Angel Heart and then (literally) within 5 minutes struggling to remember the name Marty McFly was PEAK Bret

Tonight’s the night for love under the lights. B-52s

James Reeves

Will Adam be producer AND bodyguard?

James Reeves

2021 Academy Awards postponed — ALREADY? — to April 25. WTF Bret?!?! Is Todd running this town, now?

James Reeves

Me and my wife argue who is Bret and who is Todd in our household. I want to be Bret but deep down we both know I’m Todd.

Adam Marzec

Looking forward to Bret's NEXT monologue. I have a feeling it's going to be a doozy.

Well worth revisiting Antonioni’s ‘The Passenger’, Bret. Late masterpiece & Jack Nicholson rarely better. ‘Zabriskie Point’ much greater than the critics at the time realised too. Nobody makes films like this anymore. Very few did back then.

Kovitch

Incredible that she didn't get "you only rent this stuff" almost 40 years have gone buy and she still doesn't get it!

Jorge Espinha

MTV’s The Assistant (Andy Dick) is - easily - my favorite reality show. Each episode was a spin on other - established - reality shows. And the ultimate reality was Andy hiring the winner of the grand finale... and getting into a real relationship with her. In the end, I believe Dick set up the entire show as a bizarre foreplay. https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNb3eyUqD4T9ktydpfocM_pDc9YJ_9X_n

James Reeves

Really enjoyed this for so many reasons. Needed this. Look forward to seeing her film.

Mary Walker

Great ep.

Rofl that bachelorettes in Alaska reality show she brought up! I looked it up (Looking for Love: Bachelorettes in Alaska) — golden age of reality tv trash! Joe Millionaire, Joe Schmo, Average Joe, For Love or Money, the one with people hooked up to a lie detector by their potential spouse’s parents, people competing to be Andy Dick’s assistant —— loved them all!

LM

I dunno... There was a moment Bateman referenced a film and only Bret was able to rattle off every cast and crew member.

Brian Rooney

Were they Eskimos? :D

T

Smart female guests have the best chemistry with Bret!

T

“Were you a dabbler?” I about passed out laughing!!

Matt Brown

It was uni —Sea urchin

Todd Glasson

I liked the length of this podcast but listening is a bit of a slog - not up there with the best, I must say.

Reservoir Frog

Didn’t Rob partake in all sorts of cocaine and 3-way fuck tapes?

Reservoir Frog

For a famous director to be lapdog for a stuck up fucko critiquer who has never made a movie?

Jan Rörvik

Critiques are subjective.

Jan Rörvik

Navy! Bret, Navy!

James Reeves

Was this the first guest that out-Gen-X-ed Bret?

James Reeves

I re watched both Valley Girl movies. I had a super nerdy question / observation. In the 1983 version it appears they are putting peanut butter on their sushi. Did anyone else notice this in the kitchen party scene in the beginning? Was that a thing?

valleyboy

Did Bret ask about Men Behaving Badly?

James Reeves

As quickly as I was intrigued by Justine's coy response to the 80s decadent decisions confessions question when she interpreted DLR stating "you only rent the stuff" as going to go puke versus pissing, confirms her as a square. Prob saw a lot but didn't partake. Much like a Rob Lowe.

mark zappala

The best part of the eagles question IS the quick/raw, unprepared, caught off guard responses from the guests.

mark zappala

Does anyone else have a lot to say when they get to the Eagles question? I always think, “Gee if I just wrote that book of poetry I could be on Bret’s podcast to discuss the Eagles.”

Brian Rooney

the drinking age in Cali hasn’t been 18 since like the thirties lol they just never used to give a fuck in LA

Sam

“you’ll get something back 10 fold...” “like a massive recession.” 🤣🤣

Nick Not Nolte

I love Justine Bateman! Never heard her interviewed, would share glasses of wine with her and BEE. Great pod

Erick

I loved family ties. Alex Keaton was an inspiration for me. Mallory Keaton was gorgeous, Justine Bateman was perfect in that role. I really enjoyed the interview it was a nice surprise. Great monologue as always.

Agree with Bret. Sure COVID-19 kills. So too does poverty. Sweden was right.

Benjamin Terpstra

Alright Skippy! ❤️

James Reeves

My God..... I had such a crush on her.

Quincy Battieste

@BretEastonEllis COVID-19 is not about PANIC. It is about controlling the number of cases so as not to over-run hospitals. That’s it. Flattening the curve allowed us ICU beds, equipment and personnel to handle the disease. Period. BEE- talk to healthcare people about disease, not your artist friends. Love you. Great interview w/ J.B.
