Something strange happened while I was listening to this one. Bret's voice began to remind me of the narrator in Los Angeles Plays Itself and I wondered if Bret had seen that documentary ...and if so what did he think about it? Then about half an hour later he mentions that he indeed had seen it but neglects to inform us on what his opinion of it is. I think it would be interesting if Bret spent a few minutes reflecting on his experience watching that documentary.

James Gray's honesty is refreshing.

CALIFORNIA SPLIT just dropped on Amazon Prime in the original version. Also, be curious to hear what Bret thinks of NORMAL PEOPLE on Hulu and the book. He's mentioned a few times that he doesn't' t think anyone's written the great millennial novel yet, but I'm sure he must have read Sally Rooney.

I don’t care if there are guests. I am here for movie-talk!

Welcome to LA is pretty amazing. You can order a dvd or vhs on Amazon and eBay

Great podcast but now I want to watch "Welcome to LA" and cannot find it anywhere streaming or download. Anyone else see a place to get it?

The podcast reminded me of the fact that I have seen Coal Miner's Daughter as a 16 year old in 1988 during a monthly cineclub run by nuns at the Catholic Lycée I attended at the time. No wonder I have hardly a bad word to say about those years.

Welcome L. A. isn't available at the Criterion Channel or the Criterion Collection.

Bret’s dislike of The Abyss really stings! Loved that movie as a kid (still do). Also Underwater hugely underrated - that murkiness was sublime on the big screen.

I really enjoyed this episode but I nearly spit out my drink when Bret singled MORTAL THOUGHTS out as the best Alan Rudolph film. I can only assume he hasn't seen CHOOSE ME since the 80s. Kael was a big fan too "The love roundelay CHOOSE ME, written and directed by Alan Rudolph, on a budget of $835,000, is pleasantly bananas. The characters, who wander in and out of a bar called Eve's Lounge, are lighted as if Edward Hopper lived across the street and Reginald Marsh prowled the alley; they're all vaguely amnesiac, and their dialogue is overintellectualized in a hammy-hilarious way. The songs are performed by Teddy Pendergrass, and he's just right—he does what Tom Waits is supposed to do. The entire movie has a lilting, loose, choreographic flow to it. Rudolph and his cinematographer, Jan Kieser, have developed a swoony camera style befitting the romanticism of a movie in which everyone is obsessively looking for love."

I’m going to dig into to the Alan Rudolph filmography. I can listen to BEE muse on about films for hours. No guests needed. Thanks

I wonder if Bret has seen the trailer for the Valley Girl remake.

Bret waffling on about movies for 90 minutes - even "The Abyss" - is podcast heaven. I hope this isn't the last one.
