I went back and listened to Joaquin Phoenix speech at the Oscar's. Bret was right, I did judged him too harshly, it wasn't a big deal it was mostly about animal rights, something I personally don't give a damn about but Phoenix has been very consistent about it and he's brillant, soooo who cares?

Jorge Espinha

if I had to guess it's probably a copyright thing

David Schur

I really enjoyed this one. Felt like this was the first guest in awhile that had interesting things to say on a variety of topics. Much better than the lame authors Bret's had on lately (excluding Micheal Douglas's kid form this, but he was pretty vapid too). The "Red Pill" guy, ugh.

WHO IS THE PARASITE

phuq paytch

I agreed the CGI was distracting at time’s in The Irishman, but the film was a masterpiece imo. Definitely my favourite of the year. Pesci’s performance was incredible. He was very gentle at times, while also exuding a quiet menace and coldness. “Don’t call him.”

Iain

I would disagree about 'The Irishman' being best film. It could have been, if Scorcese cut out an hour of unnecessary filler, and also used other actors for the younger sequences (i.e. Godfather II) instead of that awful CGI.

CD Twyford

Same here. The guy was really boring.

Mark Cleary

I think its an almost objective fact that The Irishman was the best film of the year. Joe Pesci's performance was not only the best of the year but was a true work of transcendent art. But Bong winning time and time again made for a really fun show and it was great to see a guy who can't even speak english up there instead having to hear more long winded speeches. He was actually capable of genuine graciousness, which is something almost completely absent from a hollywood awards show. I do think Parasite's wins were meant to send a message though, and that message was that if you want to win an oscar, no matter who you are, you can, all you have to do is make a good movie. That's literally it.

Alex Waller

A remake of Less Than Zero as an existential horror film.

Mark Cleary

Oh yes those seventies movie recommendations...

Jasper

Only listened to half of this. Turns out, magazine editors just aren’t very interesting. Ah, well...enjoyed the monologue.

Michael MacGowan

Couldn't get into this one. Last few interviews have been pretty dull

David Bell

I was thinking the same thing, I'm not sure why he fixated so much on his name change so much.

Ryan Hyde

Wow, I just sat through this cleaning my teeth with toothpicks and dentotape and the time flies past. You guys also living life through others narrative?

Jan Rörvik

Personally I don't really care one way or the other. But how is it not relevant or fair? Same for the quitting school at 9th grade. From another perspective, Taika stepping away from his Angelo name would and probably has been celebrated. Would Taika have done that had it meant career damage? As for the 9th grade comment, it's fair. Celebrities are putting themselves into leader positions and of moral arbiters. And they're celebrate for it. Shouldn't someone point out they might not be the more rigorous or disciplined of people intellectually? I feel pretty certain the conservative side would be destroyed in the press for similar choices. It's worth comment at the very least. Both facts were new to me.

bpvalentine

Longtime subscriber, first time commenter. Won’t (can’t) defend Taika Waititi’s movies, but why the withering contempt for his name? As far as I can tell, his first name is beyond his control - and he switched his last from mother’s to father’s. What’s the problem? You seemed to imply some contrived liberal-friendly indigenousness, which isn’t accurate or fair. Objective anti-liberal criticism is not a bad thing, but personal cheap shots (especially unfounded ones) are. Same could be said for recent dismissal of an actress’s opinion because she left formal schooling at ninth grade. Why reduce the tone to pointless personal trolling? If you have a reasonable point to make, why not stick to the issues?

Good pod!

Erick

Another good one, thanks. I do have a slight nit to pick... You used to have varied songs for your music bumpers. Now it’s always the same. I only have like 20 songs on my Apple playlist and two of them I immediately purchased after hearing them on this podcast. Dead Serious / Tinted Windows and Happy Heart / Andy Williams. It would be nice to discover more! It would also be interesting to hear WHY you hated JoJo Rabbit. I finally saw it and would place it at my top for the year (then Joker, then Parasite).

Binyamin Ironstone

Thanks for recommending Wagon Master, it was worth the watch. One thing you didn't mention was the incredible horse riding. I don't know if I can recall a movie where a horse was rode as fast and dangerously as when Travis is riding away from the Navajo. I assume that is why he and the group of Indians riding much more reasonably were never in the same shot. Even the "bucking bronco" sequences that were played for comedy looked realistic and dangerous. Really good, thanks.

Orenthal

i agree with you on the ‘in memoriam’ section of the oscars. a celebration of their career and upbeat cadence would be much better. much like the finale song on ‘a star is born’ (1976). the intensifying reprise of ‘watch closely now.’

Nick Not Nolte

I've always found it amusing that the right thinks of BEE as "one of them" just because he slags off woke culture, when the right as much as the left actually display a lot of what I think BEE really dislikes: rigid ideological purity

Nathan Williams

Oh Bret, how can someone so usually on point be so hopelessly naive? Parasite won because it was the best film? It won because of all the nominees, it was the most WOKE by far (class warfare). It was penance for Green Book last year.

Cine-Mechanic

Once Upon a Time looks like an HBO show, not a movie. Especially the Playboy mansion party which feels like an SNL set and seems devoid of authenticity.

Brian Rooney

I saw "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" and "Birds of Prey" four times each. It's a weird world.

Damien Smith

About the recurrent "NYC is not what it used to be" theme. It think this is typical of most big cities in the world, they all become similar now. There's still a young crowd, but now they're well paid tech engineers. So definitely a different vibe than late 90's. The one thing that's been resurging in NYC is the movie/tv industry. It seems you can't walk anywhere without running into a shoot.

FlyingWaffle

Would you consider an interview with David Lynch? Is he outside your Hollywood universe?

DEWAINE R MCBRIDE

Great movie recommendations. There‘s a really interesting audio commentary by Wise and Scorsese for The Set-Up. I take it you know Wes Andersons hommage to Day for Night (an Am Ex commercial, of all things)? And lastly, re the last podcast: Ace in the Hole was Billy Wilder‘s first job as a director?!

Lars Hubrich

Maer Roshan sounds a lot like Mr. Slave from South Park
