The B.E.E. Podcast - 1/18/20 - Joel Stein - SILVER
Added 2020-01-19 07:09:30 +0000 UTC
In the podcast's third season premiere on Patreon, writer Joel Stein and Bret Easton Ellis discuss In Defense of Elitism, the generational influence of Elizabeth Wurtzel's starkly candid style, encountering Gore Vidal and the palpable panic of Uncut Gems.
Being pro-Israel is not a thing in Hollywood? WTF? How the fuck can you say that? Israel has fewer Jews than either NYC or LA!!! What are you talking about? The US, Germany (because of extortion), and the UK are the only countries that think Israel is a good thing. Everyone else wants to get rid of the fake apartheid state.

I'm making my way through several years of episodes, so that is why I comment late and not always in the right place.
I had to let you guys know that the old man in Midsommar is Björn Andrésen who played the beautiful Tadzio in Visconti's Death in Venice. A little fun gay trivia... :)

“Oh, really?”
This seems to be Mr. Stein’s favorite question these days. Kept waiting for something insightful from him, still waiting. Thank God you’re there Bret, podcast was great nonetheless.

Evil Under the Sun with Diana Rigg, Maggie Smith, Peter Ustinov and James Mason. The style, the costumes the camp. Fun movie!

Late 80's Sandra Bernhard, Bret Easton Ellis, Shirley MacLaine, Gore Vidal, Sue Mengers, & Molly Ringwald... That's my standard answer to "Who are your dream dinner party guests?"

Numbness is a feeling. My brain could never create a phrase like that in the context discussed. Another great podcast.

I thought the name sounded familiar, then I remembered his column from TIME magazine, and how it's self-satisfied smugness always annoyed me. It was a kind of persona only a really gifted wit could pull off, which Mr. Stein unfortunately isn't. "I'm a huge liberal but please buy the book I wrote about why elites are good and populism is bad". No dude, you're not a "huge liberal", your ideas are outdated, it's ok, just accept it.

I thought the same thing until my mom (who was a preteen in San Francisco when it happened) needed me to explain the ending to her. She said to me, "I liked it but didn't something happen to Sharon???"

Anyone else kind of shocked someone born in 1971 wasn't aware of the details of the Manson murders? re: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood discussion.

Laurence Fox, a British actor recently said a few hard truths and got himself in PC hell. Ans he didn't back off. He might be an interesting guest. Actors usually aren't but this guy doesn't give a shit.

The Trump recipe: 1. Call the media biased, fake news and worst of the worst (make them your enemy) 2. Say things that are beyond outrageous (give the enemy ammunition to bury you) 3. Always dominate the headlines (wear the public down through the media) with populist ‘America First’ rethoric and reel in the 2020 election.
News is a business and bad and ugly news sells best. Trump is a true conman that knows that if the media would be truly biased, they would shut him up and give the stage to adults. Since that is not going to happen and he is getting the best media coverage you can get with his impeachment, his november re-election seems pretty solid.

Not gonna lie, the whole Neoliberal millionaire NY Jewish guy talking about why Trump won is getting kind of dull. Im sure you can find someone on the right that can talk about it.

absolutely! I love love love how bret is able to be so even handed in his reviews - praise what he likes and point out what doesn't work for him - the point about UG being a copy of a copy felt like it hit home in my experience of having seen it - even though I really enjoyed the movie itself.. Would have liked to have heard his thoughts on the deftness with which they wove real life events into the story, and managed to land all parties (Kevin Garnett, The Weekend) as well as making use of the actual real life NBA games.. Such a technical feat that is so seamlessly done, it's quite possible he missed that aspect.. I only knew about it as I've devoured a load of safdie interviews around the subject.

Uncut gems was frustrating like waiting for an hour in the bank only be told you have filled out the forms incorrectly and need some other number you have no idea how to obtain to complete the transaction. It was NOT entertainment.
Also, I wonder how much wine Bret REALLY drinks during his compulsive viewing of shitty Netflix entertainment ?

This was a REALLY good episode. Joel and Bret seem to get along and the conversation had more of a gossipy tone. Would love to hear from him again.

To Joel. Most people on the right are not anti-immigrant. We’re anti-illegal immigrant. If you don’t like our laws, change them, don’t break them.
