[PUBLIC EPISODE] The Wizard, the Witch and the Wild One: ep045 "Nothing"

Across the night, with the dawn, this version of her, our gilled mage. Suvirin Kedberiket, amphibious and unalone. In the ice cave abattoir, our survivors, the otter and the otherworldly. The fresh hells of a secret past. And then, the trail, far beyond the broad road, taking them to whatever gifts the past has left. The task at hand. A good feeling. Dark river water. Bodies at the bottom murk, but above us: nothing. Exactly where we want to be.

The score behind Eursulon's investigation of Keen's effects had such strong Myst/Riven soundtrack vibes. Pizzicato violin over cello gives me a Pavlovian urge to read a villain's diary.

We know Brennan loves him a lore dump and don't think we missed that blood in the water comment - how do wizards and witches handle the monthly cycle??

As a fellow audio engineer, i wanted come in here and give props to the Taylor and the other audio cats for the excellent use of silence in this episode. No sound is such a powerful tool that we're often afraid to use when our job is to make the noises. Killer work!

Just got top surgery today!! I think they dropped the ball. Not in every way, not across the board—but in a very specific, central way: they introduced a massive, looming, personal, and world-ending threat… and then didn’t consistently integrate it into the characters' choices, the tone of the narrative, or the pacing of the story. That’s not to say it can’t be course-corrected, but the gap is there. And I don’t think it’s some hidden metaphor or subtle theme. I think it’s just a dropped narrative thread—one that needs to be picked back up.

Agiddysea

Thanks likewise! I'm seeing where you're coming from more clearly (maybe at a slant) and I would agree that the WW&WW have spent less time that one might expect *talking* about the Man in Black--at least that we've heard!--and it doesn't feel like they're deliberately avoiding the subject, AND they have had time to do so. Point taken. So, in light of your comments, I'd say that my framing in (B) by which the characters' actions make sense (at least to me--I get that you expect different macro-actions, not just more conversation) does feels like a readerly framing, not the way the characters themselves have framed it. We have some common ground. I've a dim sense that the structure of actual play (something about the flow from scene to scene and how it relates to conversation within a scene) might be contributing to this--there might be an interesting Fireside question in there somewhere. Anyway, I've taken up more than enough space on this myself but curious to know what others think! P.S. Absolutely fair on (A)--if MiB is a metaphor for anything, it's definitely not time or mortality--but I do think that the "come back in a year" component invokes, non-metaphorically, the difficulty of dealing with progressive, delayed disaster (all-too-evident here in bad ole reality). P.P.S. "Time doesn't whisper to people in dreams" is super-evocative and I might borrow it for something if you don't object :)

GC

Totally fair that people can be overwhelmed by their personal stakes—but that’s exactly the tension I want to see explored! I don’t expect the PCs to suddenly become emotionless tacticians. I do expect the story to grapple with the fact that they're being hunted by a godlike force. And right now, it feels like that tension isn’t being acknowledged, either in-character or narratively. That’s what feels off. As for the D&D mechanics—I get it, they’re low level. No one expects the MiB to show up and swing. But that doesn’t mean the threat shouldn’t be looming. Narrative isn’t just about hit points and spell slots. The whole campaign was framed around a prophecy of death and destruction, and right now, there’s a surprising lack of urgency or strategy in how the characters are responding to that. It’s not about killing the BBEG—it’s about treating him as if he exists.

Agiddysea

Thanks for the thoughtful response. I hear where you're coming from, especially in (B), but I think we’re engaging with the story on fundamentally different levels of expectation. (A) Time may kill everyone eventually, sure, but that’s not a fair comparison. The Man in Black isn’t a metaphor for mortality—he’s an explicit, named, supernatural force with a concrete plan to kill two main characters, and by extension, destroy a cornerstone institution of the world. That’s not a "someday" problem. That’s a this story problem. Time doesn't gather resources. Time doesn't form alliances. Time doesn't whisper to people in dreams. The MiB does. (B) I don’t dispute that many of the actions could be interpreted as indirectly connected to the MiB. But my issue is how those actions are framed. None of the party members are saying, ā€œWe need to save the bullfrog because we might need him when the MiB makes his move.ā€ It’s all reactive and moral rather than strategic. That's fine from a character beat perspective, but at some point in a campaign with stakes this high, the party should start aligning their actions with the central threat. Instead, they're acting like these threads are morally important on their own—not as preparation for a larger existential crisis. The cause-and-effect chain has been emotionally satisfying, sure, but that doesn’t mean it’s narratively coherent. (C) And I get that it’s working for you! But for me, if the show is going to stake its premise on the threat of a god who believes he must kill Suvi and Ame to destroy the world’s biggest institution, then I need to see that threat addressed head-on. Not just gestured at. Not just threaded through moral decisions after the fact. Otherwise, it starts to feel like the story is building to something that the characters—and sometimes even the narrative itself—don’t seem to care about. I'm not asking for every session to be a strategy meeting. But I am saying that if the show tells us the MiB is the Darth Vader of this world, then someone should at least be keeping an eye on the sky.

Agiddysea

People are to wrapped up in their personal stories to fully concentrate on the sheer magnitude of the world ending? Welcome to people, I guess. P.S they’re like 3rd level my guy, narrative or no this is dnd, I doubt an experienced DM is going to have the BBEG show up and kill them right now.

retrocalie

Really well said!

GC

(A) Time, god or no god, is going to kill everyone on the planet. Is everyone acting like it? Most days I'm not :/ (B) Let's assess the big narrative events. Getting Wavebreaker to break the curse on Ame is explicitly a reaction to the MiB. Freeing Naram is a moral necessity and forges an alliance with a Great Spirit. Resting at the Citadel is a medical necessity (not much Suvi and Eursulon can do about the MiB until Ame wakes up). WitchCon is direct self-preservation (no grace period there), and becomes a (mostly failed) attempt to deny the MiB an ally. Silver is a loved one who is immediately threatened. Rescuing the Grenaux kids is a moral necessity and might forge an alliance with a Great Spirit (🐸😰). Which of these seems like a sideline? What should anyone have done differently? (C) I'm certainly not saying the narrative couldn't get too far away from the looming threat, but by my lights it hasn't yet. For my part, I trust that given the caliber of storytellers and storytelling here, the central conflict isn't going to get dropped. And while I hear your frustration, and I'm sorry that it seems to be interfering with your enjoyment of the story, I have to say that the narrative sequencing is really working well for me. As in life, everything has followed urgently from the previous thing, and nothing seems as though it could have been avoided--and yet the awful clock's still ticking...

GC

The Man in Black is the antagonist of this campaign for one very clear reason: he must kill Ame and Suvi—two main characters—in order to destroy the Citadel. He will also kill Ursulon, not out of malice, but simply because Ursulon chooses to stand in defense of his friends. This isn’t speculation. It’s stated in the text. He’s gathering resources, forging alliances, and preparing for war. And yet... the player characters don’t seem to care. Suvi breaks with the Citadel, knowing full well that the Citadel may be the only institution with a vested interest in keeping her alive—not just because of her connection to Steel, but because, per the Man in Black’s own prophecy, killing her is the key to their destruction. Ame and Ursulon aren’t faring better. All three characters are more focused on personal growth, moral reckonings, and emotional catharsis. There has not been a single scene in which they meaningfully discuss the existential threat bearing down on them. Even if we accept the "you have a year" grace period, that’s not a buffer. That’s a countdown. The clock is ticking—and they’re ignoring the ticking. This isn't a vibe. It's a threat. The narrative is telling us these characters are in grave danger, but the characters themselves are acting like they’re not. Instead, we’re getting breakups, solo missions, and warzone heroics with almost no connection to the central conflict. You can have emotional beats. You can have personal arcs. But you can’t do that while sidelining the primary obstacle of the story. The Man in Black isn't a metaphor. He’s a god trying to kill you. Start acting like it.

Agiddysea

The destruction of the landscape in this episode was almost more devastating to me than experiencing Ame and Fox’s pain in the last episode… I have such deep dread at what Twelve Brooks has become, and the state of the children when they arrive. I don’t think anyone (maybe Eursulon) is prepared for understanding the consequences of what Silence did to the Great Bullfrog. Next episodes are going to be fucking rough. AND, beautifully executed because I’ve noticed as the environment becomes more of an essential part of this story, Taylor and Jared are immersing us more and more into some really gorgeous sound design. Every episode is art, y’all. In every aspect. Thank you.

Witch of the Remembering Bog

All of the above šŸ’«

Witch of the Remembering Bog

My empathy at being ā€œthe friend who picks my other friends up from jailā€ really kicked in at this part. Ame really fucked up, and then she subjected Fox to some bad shit. Sorry is fine, but acting in accordance needs to take place and we’ll just have to see if Ame can walk the walk. I think Eursulon is also getting the mission done, and is spending much of this mission thinking about how he’s different from his friends, and if they got his back the way they seem to assume he’s got theirs… I don’t blame him for being a little ā€œprofessionalā€ in that moment.

Witch of the Remembering Bog

I hope this isn't strange to say, but re shared human experiences, we mirror each other! I'm from Singapore and now live in Manhattan, and your description of the green and humidity makes me miss it so much! I hope my weird little island is treating you well šŸ’š

taromilktea

For the fireside - Ame rolled a nat 1, what would’ve been heard with a nat20? Love the team. Great episode. Just so happy for vandal (I also gasped with Aabria when Ame cracked the book open!)

SaĆÆda Siam

This arc is getting so juicy! Fireside question: Suvi seems to have quickly shifted her mindset about the citadel. How has she come to this, we all know there has been mounting evidence but she has not expressed this outwardly very much. Was she just full of snakes? <3 Sky

Aina (The Wizard Sanctuary)

Suvi remains so interesting. SO many things had to happen for Suvi to desert - she had to be raised in a environment relatively insulated from the rigidity of a military power structure (a Citadel wizard even thinking about threatening imperial soldiers because her mom might get mad, much less getting away with it scot-free, seems like evidence of that), she was spoonfed evidence of Citadel involvement in trapping greater spirits, she needed emotional appeals from her only friends, her lover rejected her concerns outright, and her presumed archnemesis not only NOT kill her, he showed her An Uncle's Warmthā„¢ļø. And even with all of that - if the New Suvi hadn't experienced betrayal and theft of agency at the hands of the Citadel and Old Suvi, if it weren't for that very personal betrayal, would she be able to shatter her staff and turn against the Citadel? I'm not going in on Suvi here - I'm not comfortable calling 'being indoctrinated' a character flaw in broad unqualified terms. Just - so many things had to happen in order for her to turn against the Citadel. Which, again, very interesting work. One also wonders how much relief Suvi feels at never hearing the phrase "I don't understand, you have all the resources of the Citadel at your disposal" from a lover again.

The Wizard Shitposter

I wrote this whole long thing about growing up in north Jersey, going to college and living in Manhattan and my whole life being scored by that wonderful crush, the constant sound of existing shoulder to shoulder with people. Now the different but similarly comforting cacophony of living in Singapore and walking in the jungle/river/swamp reserve near my apartment filling that city kid void. It is choked with life and green and humidity so thick it coats you. Silence there would just be wrong it would fill me with something akin to dread. That feeling that nameless feeling that YOU GUYS PUT INTO WORDS FOR THIS BEAUTIFUL STORY!!!! MAN THE POWER OF SHARED HUMAN EXPERIENCE!!! I DON’T KNOW HOW TO EXPLAIN HOW MUCH I god this is so!!! Man oh man!! I guess just - Thank you

Esther Bee

Question for Lou’s stand in: Why didn’t Eursalon lay on hands the foxes widdle iddy biddy paw better?

Nash Quella

Question for Aabria: don't wizards, specifically knowing they're fighting shape changers who probably have enhanced olfactory senses, have anything for being "on the rag"? Or does Suvi just not subscribe to whatever that sort of anti-period solution is?

Keen's presence in this story has been: -ominous dandy introduction -botched kidnapping that quickly resulted in his death -a bunch of off-screen stuff Farewell, Harpsichord, we hardly knew ye 🫔

The Wizard Shitposter

Question for Brennan: were the ink demons’ forms inspired by Morph from Treasure Planet? Because the description of Vandal’s rebirth made me think of Morph!

Micah Ballard

I have questions about this too since she abandoned her father's ring (which I'm thinking is her arcane focus) and destroyed her staff. How is she still casting?

Chelsie K

Oh my god everybody keeps referencing this likes it not a theme from ancient philosophy and literature. So thank you. The best/most concise example I can think of is Jorge Luis Borges ā€œCircular Ruinsā€ short story.

David Giannetti

Their immediate priority should be the wandering death god actively gathering resources to fulfill his stated goal of murdering them. The party not reacting to that—barely even acknowledging it—doesn’t feel thematic. It feels narratively incoherent. The Man in Black is the central conflict of this party and this story. His goals are simple, stated, and directly opposed to the party’s survival. Choosing to focus on anything else isn’t compelling—it’s confusing.

Agiddysea

per @Adarsh Nednur, I think the key here is that the MiB has given them a year before he will act directly--at least this is how I read their exchange in Ep. 1, and how I think Ame read it as well. (He's been holding his breath since the dawn of the world--he can wait a little longer...) So for me, the gathering sense that the WW&WW may not be preparing quickly enough connects to the very poignant theme about Grandmother Wren: she delayed, and delayed, and delayed. So I think I feel the pressure you're feeling, @Adiggysea, but for me the party's actions are diegetically reasonable--they've got a lot of immediate priorities and they still *feel* like they have enough time--and thematically strong.

GC

Lou's esteemed colleagues made a point of saying Eursalon didn't hug Ame back - why though? Was Eursalon keeping his hands free in case of more danger? Has he been in Situations himself and wanted to let Ame control how she was touched? Does he feel guilty that Ame was taken in the first place and he couldn't defend her? (not his fault obviously)

Serenity4Jane

i laughed for three full minutes

First thing I said out loud after seeing the episode title was oh no. Taylor, Jared and team, that sounds design was absolutely eerie and excellent plus Brennan's creepily haunting descriptions and the reactions from the PCs, captivating as always.

Sigh. The Don. 🫠

Aabria Iyengar

Suvi couldn't join the Coven of elders because they side with the Man in Black the entity determined to kill her and Ame.

Agiddysea

Is it bad that I kinda want the group to join in on the coven's war on the citadel? It feels crazy that we're finding out the citadel is doing all these things and even Suvi basically broke off from the citadel, for there to not at some point be a big formed alliance against the citadel. I guess it'll really depend on Ame's whole "bridge between spirit and human" ideal. Ame really gives me Avatar Aang vibes, where there's such a stubborn focus on peace and being a figure of peace, that they're unwilling to do the necessary things to keep everything functioning. I really wanna see Ame break more out of the mold of this big ideal of what the witch of the world's heart should be.

Chameleon

Holy heck the sound design in this one! That is exactly what it sounds like when you're hiding beneath an overturned boat in the water. I actually took an involuntary deep breath when Eursulon surfaced for the first time to look around. And then the pressing silence. The hollow, cloying silence behind their words and in between the dialogue. Damn. So good.

Jennifer Sieben

After looking at the map, I think your right @GC.

The witch of winding rivers

THE DON!!!!

Worlds Beyond Number

Also, Suvi still hasn’t told Steel that the Man in Black believes killing her and Ame is the key to destroying the Citadel. That’s a massive piece of intel to withhold—especially from the Sword of the Citadel, the person responsible for defending it.

Agiddysea

The Don

Christopher Martin-Givens

Eursulon’s conflict with the Man in Black is philosophical. He considers the Stranger a brother and only stands against him because he’s chosen to stand with Ame and Suvi. He has an emotional tether—but not an existential threat. Suvi and Ame, on the other hand, are facing an actual god-level being who believes he must kill them to fulfill his purpose. So, for them, the children are a side quest as the threat of the Man in Black takes up all the room.

Agiddysea

I need you to know i read this in the first 5 mins of the podcast and spent the rest of the episode anxious that the Fox and Eursulon got in a fight šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Ro Lara

I feel like this episode is the start a very confusing period where I am forever going to be offering my PCs lemons in every session.

I was finding a lot of similarities to the Dreamtime of native Australians but they talk about similarities between native peoples cultures so I think a lot so I think it might be one of those.

Elijah Peters

The joy I feel imagining the rage on her face at this suggestion is immense.

Susan Buckley

I love how his presence is felt even when his actions aren’t the principal focus. The lurking feeling I get from his symbol among the others of The Spirits Three—a significant tie to The Great Bullfrog which has me thinking about what side the Grenoux (sp?) may find themselves on in all of this—is much more enjoyable to me than constant attention to his movements. It lends the King of Night space to move in secret. He could make a move at Twelve Brooks (I’m sure whatever has happened to the Great Bullfrog isn’t unnoticed) or he could bide his time for the best moment to strike and remove the dagger that is the citadel from the heart of this world. His words, not mine. I’m very trusting of WBN’s ability to hold rationales and movements pretty tight across Umora regardless. He’s up to something out there; I’m on the edge of my seat to find out! Also since when is the rescue of the Grenoux children a side quest? When Ame says she’s sorry they have to be in this situation and Eursalon responds: ā€œI’m not. This is exactly where I want to be.ā€ I feel that he’s closer to acting in line with his quest than he ever has been before this point!!! 🤤

The Witch of Ways and Means

If a godlike entity who can bend time and rot fruit just by standing near it told you, ā€œHey, I need to kill you to achieve my goal,ā€ and then left you alive, your next week wouldn’t be spent on side quests or emotional check-ins. You’d either be trying to fortify your position, gather information, build alliances, or—bare minimum—talking constantly about it. That’s just survival instinct.

Agiddysea

We're not calling this "The Fanged and the Furious"? Ok

Lojaan

The word "silence" has taken on such a sinister quality to me now any time it is said

Adarsh Nednur

I think in-world it's only been, like, a week or two since the Coven of Elders voted to join him in marching on the Citadel. We know that he's been amassing warlocks in Rhuv as well as enlisting Sir Curran in some form. I would assume he's currently working with the witches to coordinate their forces and prepare their attack, as Suvi recently warned Steel while in Brackin. Plus the thing that kicked off the story was him giving Ame a year before he came knocking. Seems pretty normal for him to not be the most salient thing currently.

Adarsh Nednur

Can't believe we went from the hottest megalodon and a duck spy to the deep existential dread of silence. Just subbed to the patreon and am so happy to be here!!

taromilktea

Wondering what the Man in Black is up to… you know, the ancient spirit who can distort time and has vowed to kill 2 out of 3 main characters in order to destroy the Citadel. The one who kicked off the entire story in Episode 1. That guy. Feels strange that he hasn’t been seen or seriously discussed in over a dozen episodes. Seems like he should be a way bigger deal.

@The witch of winding rivers -- also, the map (posted on Oct 8 2024) shows the Lydwin in a geological context. It looks like Hallicker Forest splits the northern Shroud Mountains into two watersheds--one drains to the west, going from Fort Kieran through Stonerill and then on to Rimer's Bay, and the other drains to the south (as the Lydwin), skirting the east side of the forest until it gets to Reedport, then Twelve Brooks (ā¤ļø), and then joining a succession of other rivers draining into what looks like a flatter area to the south. All of the rivers in the mountainous area should go "downstream" in the direction out of the mountains (high to low), so I think it's consistent with the episode...

There is a bonus one shot that takes place in twelve brooks. At the start of that episode they describe the geography of Twelve Brookes pretty thoroughly. From what I remember the river branches a bunch and cascades over many waterfalls which feed a large lake. The town is built on a bit of a rocky incline in-between all the falls and tributaries. There are many foot bridges that connect the town together. The castle was not described but it is at a high point overlooking the town but is mostly in disuse. So as described traveling down stream to twelve brooks makes sense. Aswell, in the Twelve brooks episode it was hammered home that this town is incredibly beautiful, charming and an artsy tourist destination.

Kate Fisher

I love how Brennan and Lou made their Horner Corner bafflement canon

I listen to this in my headphones pretty much exclusively to pick up on all the juicy details I might miss other wise. Taylor’s consideration for atmosphere, ambiance, texture, and pressure really contributes to how immersive this story is. Truly love every new episode. I gotta check in though, since they are going up to twelve brooks, and I'm assuming the river they are traveling up starts in twelve brooks, then wouldn't they actually be traveling upstream or against the current? Taylor’s sound design is out of this WORLD!!! The actual *silence* was palpable, the sounds when they’re in the canoe… GOSH!!! Taylor the MVP of WBN forever

danielle

Nicholas Savage AKA Eursulon’s knight in training

that completely went over my head haha

Jack Jones

I love how when Brennan was describing the absence of noises we took for granted, the complete silence that was present made it so clear how much ambience Taylor puts into the episodes. It’s only something u fully notice when it’s gone!

The jowler
