Fireside Chat for the CHILDREN's ADVENTURE ROUNDUP

A fun little change to our usual schedule, since some key cast is out of town and far away from microphones at the moment: This week the Fireside Chat is all about the Children's Adventure! (We'll do a double Fireside Chat for eps 3 & 4 after ep4 comes out!).

Join the gang as they dig deep, some say too deep, into all things Children's Adventure. The square footage of Grandma Ren's Cottage, the intricate and well defined rules for running a lvl0 character creation campaign, and the secret history of the mushroom spirit. Listen quickly before the balrogs carry our precious cast away. Fly*, you fools!

I did not realize I came here for a full unravelling of that soup scene from The Two Towers, but I'm now caaaackling at work and I need to pause this podcast until I can cackle in peace 😂😂 totally with Erika about the absolute slackjaw mouthwater that is Aragorn 🥵

Genna

Finding out Brennan ALSO hosted an LOTR marathon for his friends (at which many were simply not paying attention) just confirms to me that I really do relate to him on every level😂

AND 4 BEARS?!

Mr. Borg has 4 fathers?!

I just wanna add to this for anyone else wondering. I have now listened to this children’s adventure fireside chat and it’s absolutely fine to listen to if the only thing you’ve listened to so far is the children’s campaign. There are no spoilers for the main campaign in it.

“What If” episodes are an amazing idea.

Marcus Burns

I wish I could adequately describe the sheer amount of joyful chaos instilled in me every time I listen to these guys goofing out together. It's so good! The deep dive on LotR Two Towers ended me!

RoseWitch

Aabria bruh that confession made my whole day

Grass

I believe Silver was one of the wizards who had returned to the Citadel from the war (during Suvi's adult intro). Edit: I went to doublecheck & yes, it's in the Wizard Then and Now preview: "There's again, probably like five or so of these returning heroes, one of whom is Silver."

Phoenix Johnstone

wait who was silver again?

I think that's kinda the point. Suvi was raised by imperial wizards. She was only at the cottage for 1 summer and has since been surrounded by a bunch of arcane users who look down on "hedge mages" and feel it is their duty to fight their stupidity and tradition. Of course that arrogance and bullheadedness was gonna rub off on her. She feels she had to prove herself and that Ame is naive for thinking of someone who attacked her was deserving of anything other than the most humiliating treatment. She's the colonial mindset incarnate and it's great to see how that causes problems when trying to form a community with people with different ideas and experiences. Honestly Aabria as an arrogant wizard is peak D&D and I'm here for it.

Does anyone know the name of the song that is used while Taylor (hi Taylor!) reads the credits? My classical music playlists don’t have it apparently! Cheers gang :)

johanna

Thanks! I have almost finished the children's adventure which is why I was asking :)

I wouldn't. Not only for sake of spoilers, but some things just won't make sense. (I'm speaking of the Fireside chat, not the Children's Adventure. I definitely recommend listening to the Children's Adventure first!)

That's not what it's like at all. Ame would ensure that the corpse wouldn't rise again, while Suvi wanted to toss it overboard with no assurances. Empathy for the dead or not, Ame actually had a reason and a plan. Suvi was just puffing her chest and being difficult just to make a point about her personality. It's not a good aspect of the character, but I suppose she could be setting up for future growth. Still, something about the way Aabria has played all of her characters - there's this similar thread of pretentiousness that never gets resolved.

Netherlore

Can anyone tell me if I can safely (spoiler free) listen to this if I haven't started the main campaign yet?

Yeah I trust the players to handle it well it was just a huge shock to me that Aabria went that route

W1LDF1RE

Honestly not a big fan of the "Brainwashed hitler youth who thinks she's the absolute shit" part of the character but I trust Aabria and the rest of the table. I'm also gleefully awaiting the moment her superiors in the citadel respond to the PR disaster that is her wielding authority

Suvi was raised from 6 years old to be the weapon of an empire. We don't know much about the Citadel yet, but we can guess that they're not that great. I'd also argue that this wasn't sudden at all. We saw the foreshadowing of it in the Children's Adventure, and we out-and-out saw it in her introduction in the first epsidoe. This is absolutely the kind of attitude you'd have if you were raised in the military of an imperial culture.

CJ

“Why is Suvi all of a sudden an apathetic insufferable prick?” ironic of you to say that

Bee Ami

I guess I understood it as: If you were told a group of people hated you and wanted you dead, and your first real interaction with them reinforced that idea, and then your childhood friend was like "Oh, but I feel empathy for them!" I would also react super negatively. In Suvi's mind, Ame just went to comfort the racist who is crying cause you called them out for their racism

I guess I just don’t understand why she treated Ame the way she did.

W1LDF1RE

I think you're underestimating the stress of the battle/the conditioning of the empire. This battle against an agent of the Dominion is literally what Suvi has been trained for since she was 6, of course she's going to go into robot soldier mode when confronted with a threat so connected to her time at the citadel. That brainwashing goes deep and I'm excited to see her arc concerning it in the future- after all there is a whole decade+ of her life we haven't seen yet.

Francis Xavier Lally

I’m halfway through episode 4, and did I miss something huge? Why is Suvi all of a sudden an apathetic insufferable prick? Is it simply because she’s spent so long trying to pretend like she fit in with the adults at the citadel that she never took the time to actually grow up and emotionally mature past age 6, or is there some deeper reason she’s a piece of shit to her so called ‘family’ out of the blue? I feel like that was a massive character shift with absolutely no reason given.

W1LDF1RE

Oh that makes sense, I didn’t even know you could do that! Thanks so much

Temperance

I think it means that her strength ability score went down by 4

Taylor Davies

I tried googling, what are strength points in combat? When Ame was attacked she lost 4 strength points. I didn’t know that was a thing.

Temperance

I think it’s funny we’re using the Patreon comments section as a discord channel

Dariel

It's up! It's up!

TheMisterCano

option two I think 😆

thank you! i could’ve sworn that they said multiple times that there’d be no “official” WBN discord server, was this a later addition that was never officially announced or was this a fan created one that Taylor just joined in order to corral the masses?😅

Does Taylor post updates? Twitter?

Dariel

Where?

Dariel

yes i would also like to know, was it twitter?

Camille Lanata

Where does our dude post those updates?

Amanda Marie

Great! Thank you for letting us know!

Evilest Teapot

Taylor put out a message that the episode is a bit late because of updating/upgrading, but it is on the way!

GrnShttrdLyte

I was wondering to, the episodes are recorded in advance so I wouldn’t have thought the wedding would delay it but it’s a possibility. The release time probably just fluctuates slightly between weeks

Evilest Teapot

i don’t want to sound like an impatient or greedy fan, but is there anyone else wondering where the next episode is of WWW? don’t they usually come out every other week at around 4am CST ? or is this one delayed because of the nuptials/honeymoon situation ?
