When it comes to long term psychological abuse, simply having the means to escape isn’t necessarily going to be sufficient enough for a broken psyche. What often happens is when you are around an abusive partner for so long you start to convince yourself that this is what you deserve and you don’t deserve anything better. The mother probably feels guilty for being a bad mother and as a result she is punishing herself by staying with her abusive husband. However, she is still selfish and only thinking about herself with this mentality which is not helpful to those she loves. A rational person would try to make amends for their wrongdoings not inadvertently perpetuate the harm.

2025-03-10 21:08:52 +0000 UTCThe way the mom just stands there and watches the father make both her children miserable (while also making her miserable with his consistent cheating), and the best she can offer are weak protests that she immediately stops once he barks at her. Like you said Nolan, there is nothing keeping her there. Not fear of her husband or financial issues. She is choosing this pathetic and humiliating life over her children. The fact that she has her own money, means she could also have been helping her daughter for the last two years without the husband knowing. Even if she didn't want to meet with Rak in the event he finds out, she could have been secretly helping so her daughter doesn't struggle, but she cut her off the same as the father. Kawi is too much like the mom. Rak is young and maybe naïve in some aspects, but she always stands up for herself and the people she cares for. She never backs down in the face of the father's dominance. Kawi could learn a thing or too from her.
