The Eighth Sense Episode 8 Reaction

So the way I see it, this show is showing that mental health and recovery is not a straight road. Shit goes left, we make stupid decisions to protect ourselves or others. For jaewon distancing himself from jihyun is to protect jihyun from himself. He explained to the therapist that he was too selfish and that’s why jihyun got hurt. From what we have seen so far he has depression, survivors guilt and an abusive parent on top of that. He is in such a dark place it’s almost hard to watch, his scenes in the last episode had such dark coloring. He literally sits and doesn’t pay attn to anyone, he’s def in a dark state of mind.

I really love this show and always enjoy your reactions. For me, it's becoming more and more frustrating to me when writers make the decision to go the mental health route, but only make a half-assed attempt with the script. Whilst we all can agree that Jae Won is dealing with deep trauma, the writers at least showed us he is in therapy and taking medication. So why did they become lazy with his character and scripted him with no coping skills or relevant progress with his trauma. His character is giving us the perception that his is living in his trauma when we see he taking measures to heal/cope through therapy and meds. This show missed an opportunity to associate the importance of therapy and proper medication as it relates to overcoming trauma. It would have been nice to see how years of therapy helped as he was presented with this new traumatic situation. Instead they gave us the relasped mental health trope where the character not only lives in grief, they transfer it to those around them. We have two more episodes so fingers crossed.

I think they ment to show that he was taking medication for his depression!

I get that jae won has depression, so I can never understand what he is going through. However, knowing that this person gave themselves to you for the first time and you react like that is too cruel. Also, on YouTube the directors released scenes to show jae won going through it and he had pills in his hands. Idk if the signifies he was thinking of overdosing because of all the guilt he has.

What I like about Ji Hyun is, he is not forcing Jae Won right now. He is telling him that he is there and we need to comminicate. He knows Jae Won needs time so he isnt as pushy as we would like him to be. Jae Won is figuring things out and undergoing a lot of trauma right now. We just have to wait and see I guess.

I think what this series is really going for is empathy..I can get feeling mad and frustrated at Jae Won for ignoring JiHyun but its clear he has alot of survivors guilt and PTSD from his little brother dying so he feels he's helping Ji Hyun by pushing him away seems alot like a response to his traumas. While I don't agree with him ignoring Ji Hyun I feel more sad for both of them... rather than angry.. I really love how Ji Hyun put his cards out there and doesn't press or push Jae Won who is clearly just fucked up from everything..the creators of this are very open about wanting to create a dialogue around mental health and I think empathy is such a great thing to focus on. Just my thoughts before I watch the reaction. <3 Also I’m a very sensitive and empathic person so this is just my personal perspective on things. Thanks for the reaction
