Webtoon Creation: Working With a Flats Artist

Because my new series Cinderella Boy is so much more work than Stagtown, I did have to take on an assistant, who is located overseas and does my flats. This means she's responsible for coloring all the flat colors for the characters, and then I go back in and add the patterns, shading, light effects, highlights on hair and fabric, etc. I am glad she's in charge of all those dumb stripes on the villain's purple shirt, those drive me insane. :D

Flat colorists usually get paid a set amount per panel of art for a webtoon, though they might give a discount on some panels that are less complicated than others.

This is a flat color reference sheet that I have to make for every character, for each outfit they have, so she knows what colors to use. We may end up going through dozens or even a hundred of these by the end of the first two seasons, depending on how many costume changes people go through and how many characters are introduced. Considering all the storybook people Chase meets, they can really pile up!

I'm really grateful for her help, as she saves me hours of work every week. Since she's much more experienced and faster at coloring, she can color an entire episode in just a few hours, whereas it would take me all day!
