Recently Laid Off

I was debating whether or not to make a post about this, but I decided that I want to keep subscribers in the loop with what's going on. Like the title says, I got laid off recently and I am not sure when I will be able to find work again because the market is pretty bad.

On the bright side I now have a lot more time to work on things and study art (which sounds awesome to me). Downside is I don't really have adequate income to cover bills with just Patreon.

I plan to take it easy for a bit and focus on art, self-care, and the Patreon/Subscribestar. I don't imagine I will ever make enough income with the way I am currently running the Patreon. I've already started a personal comic, and I will see how that affects subscriber recruitment when I start posting that. I also think that having any of my own OCs in general would help with engagement (though it's not something that comes naturally to me). Other ways I see other artists making a decent income on here is animation or video games, so I might try shifting into those at some point as well.

I had been working as an animator in the video game industry, so I plan to put some time into seriously learning Blender, 2d animation, and 3d sculpting. I have been put off animating much in Blender or 2d because I was kind of pampered at work with good rigs and a technical department that made things run without much extra effort from me.

I will probably have to move back in with my parents in a few months if I don't find full-time work. I am applying to work in my field, but I don't have high hopes there in the short term because there aren't many job postings and the market is flooded with senior animators looking for work.

A decent chunk of next year should be covered by unemployment insurance, but when that runs out, I guess I will have to try and find any kind of work for income, assuming the Patreon hasn't grown any.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here or on Discord. If you know of any leads for animation work, I'll take those as well!

Sorry about tone whiplash between posts, I had some extra time today and figured I would write this up and post it.

Thanks!

The job market is such a nightmare, I hope you can take the time to yourself in the meantime and more folks follow your efforts. I'll happily boost anything you post over on Bluesky to guide more folks your way.
