CG C129: Plan Backfires
Added 2024-10-13 18:19:53 +0000 UTCNo ambushes, no last-minute twists. Maybe I was worried for nothing, Kai breathed a sigh of relief as he stepped through the gates of the Azure Sky Sect.
As they walked through the sect grounds, Kai noticed some curious glances from other disciples. He realized he must look tense and on edge compared to the others.
"You okay there, Kai?" Yin Mengshuang asked, raising an eyebrow. "You look like you're expecting an attack at any moment."
Kai forced himself to relax. "Just leftover adrenaline from the mission, I guess."
Yin Mengshuang laughed. "Relax, we're home now. Save that energy for training."
Wang Lin, who had been walking ahead of them, turned back. "Speaking of which, we need to report to the Sect Master. Follow me."
As they made their way to the Sect Master's quarters, Kai couldn't help but feel a mix of pride and nervousness. They had completed their mission successfully, but facing the Sect Master always made him a bit uneasy.
The group arrived at a grand building near the peak of the highest mountain. Two guards stood at attention outside.
Wang Lin nodded to the guards, who bowed respectfully and opened the doors.
Sect Master Luo Qiang sat behind a massive desk; his eyes held a hint of something Kai couldn't quite place. Anticipation? Worry?
"Welcome back," the Sect Master said. "I trust your mission was successful?"
Wang Lin stepped forward and bowed. "Yes, Master. We completed our objectives as planned."
"Excellent. Give me a full report."
Kai listened as Wang Lin recounted the events of their mission. He described the ambush, the battles with the Crimson Phoenix cultivators, and how they set up the scene to frame the Boundless Earth Sect.
"The two junior disciples performed better than expected," Wang Lin said. "Shen Yu defeated his opponent with ease. But Kai..." Wang Lin paused, a hint of surprise in his voice. "Kai managed to defeat a Foundation Establishment cultivator despite being at the Qi Refining stage."
Kai saw the Sect Master's eyes widen slightly at this. There was a flash of something in Luo Qiang's gaze but it disappeared before Kai could identify it.
"Is that so?" Luo Qiang said, his gaze fixed on Kai. "That's quite an accomplishment. Well done."
"Thank you, Sect Master,” Kai bowed. “I was merely fortunate in finding a weakness in my opponent's defense."
The Sect Master nodded, then turned his attention back to Wang Lin. "And there were no complications? No witnesses or unexpected arrivals?"
"None, Sect Master," Wang Lin replied confidently. "We left the scene exactly as planned. By now, the Boundless Earth Sect should have discovered the bodies, and tensions between them and the Crimson Phoenix Sect should be rising."
"Excellent work, all of you,” Luo Qiang smiled, clearly satisfied. “This will give us the advantage we need in the coming conflict. I'll keep you updated on the situation and let you know when we're ready to make our next move. For now, rest and prepare yourselves. War is coming, and we must be ready."
Just as they were turning to leave, a sharp beeping sound filled the air. Everyone froze, turning to look at the Sect Master. Luo Qiang frowned, reaching into his robes to pull out a glowing communication token.
"What is it?" he asked sharply, activating the token.
A panicked voice came through, loud enough for everyone to hear. "Sect Master! We have a problem! The Boundless Earth Sect members and the elders sent by the Crimson Phoenix Sect to investigate their missing cultivators - they're all dead!"
Kai felt his blood run cold. What? How is that possible?
The voice continued, growing more frantic. "They were killed by a young Early Nascent Soul cultivator. Witnesses described him as being in his early twenties. The only known cultivator fitting that description is..."
"Wang Lin," Luo Qiang finished, his voice tight with anger.
Kai glanced at Wang Lin, seeing shock and confusion on his face. He didn't do it. We left before the others arrived. But who could have...?
The voice on the communication token confirmed their fears. "Both sects are blaming us, Sect Master. They've... they've officially declared war on the Azure Sky Sect."
The room fell silent, the weight of those words crushing down on all present. Kai felt his heart racing. This was far worse than he had imagined.
Luo Qiang's face hardened. "Understood. Activate our defensive arrays immediately. Alert all sect elders and have them report to me at once. Recall any disciples on outside missions. Send word to all our allies - we'll need every bit of support we can get. We move to a war footing as of now."
"Yes, Sect Master!" The voice replied before the communication cut off.
Luo Qiang turned to face them. "It seems our plans have been complicated by an unknown party. Wang Lin, I sent you to ensure there were no issues. It appears that was my mistake."
Kai watched as Wang Lin's face darkened. It was clear he had never experienced failure before, and the sting of the Sect Master's disappointment was palpable.
"I... I apologize, Sect Master," Wang Lin said, his voice tight with barely contained fury. "I take full responsibility for this failure. Please, allow me to lead the counterattack. I'll make sure those responsible pay for their actions."
Luo Qiang shook his head. "No, Wang Lin. Your skills will be needed here. The Crimson Phoenix and Boundless Earth Sects will likely bring the fight to our doorstep. If we go on the offensive now, we'll leave ourselves vulnerable to attack."
The Sect Master stood, his presence seeming to fill the entire room. "Everyone, prepare for battle. We have less than 24 hours before the first wave of attacks begins. Wang Lin, gather the other Nascent Soul cultivators and begin strengthening our defensive formations. Yin Mengshuang, Qi Liaxuan, I want you to organize the Core Formation and Foundation Establishment disciples. Make sure they're ready to support our main forces or evacuate if necessary."
As the others bowed and turned to leave, Luo Qiang's gaze fell on Kai and Shen Yu. "You two have shown great potential. Kai, your defeat of a Foundation Establishment cultivator proves you're ready for more responsibility."
Kai straightened, expecting to be assigned to the alchemy department. It would be a safe role, away from the front lines. He could contribute without putting himself in too much danger.
But the Sect Master's next words shattered that hope.
"Kai, I want you to form your own team. You'll be one of the groups targeting key Qi Refining and Foundation Establishment weaknesses in the enemy's defenses."
Kai's eyes widened in shock. "Sect Master, I... I don't understand. Wouldn't I be more useful in the alchemy department? My skills-"
Luo Qiang shook his head, cutting off Kai's protest. "Any alchemist can brew potions, Kai. But your skills will be best put to use during battle. You've proven you can handle yourself against stronger opponents. We need that on the front lines."
This wasn't what Kai had expected at all. He had thought he'd found a safe niche for himself, a way to contribute without risking his life directly. Now, he was being thrown right into the thick of the fighting.
"But Sect Master," Kai tried again, his voice wavering slightly, "I'm still only at the Qi Refining stage. Surely there are others more qualified-"
"Others who haven't defeated a Foundation Establishment cultivator," Luo Qiang interrupted, his voice firm. "You have a unique perspective, Kai. You see weaknesses others might miss. That's what we need out there."
Kai swallowed hard, realizing there was no way out of this. He bowed deeply, trying to hide the fear in his eyes. "I... I understand, Sect Master."
"Shen Yu," Luo Qiang continued, "you’re in charge of organising the Qi Refining cultivators. Report to Wang Lin, he’ll be there to mentor you.”
"Understood, Sect Master," Shen Yu replied.
As they all filed out of the Sect Master's quarters, Kai couldn't help but feel overwhelmed. Everything had changed so quickly. What should have been a successful mission had turned into the prelude to all-out war.
He glanced at Shen Yu, hoping to see some reaction from his usually stoic fellow disciple. To his surprise, he caught a fleeting look of excitement in Shen Yu's eyes before it vanished behind his usual mask of indifference.
What was that about? Is he actually looking forward to this war?
As they walked down the mountain path, the sect was already a flurry of activity. Disciples rushed back and forth, carrying messages and supplies. It seems that word about the war had already spread.
Yin Mengshuang broke the silence. "Well, this is going to be fun," she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Nothing like a good old-fashioned sect war to liven things up."
Qi Liaxuan shook his head. "War is never something to be taken lightly, Mengshuang. Many lives will be lost in the coming days."
"I know that," she snapped back. "But what else can we do but face it head-on? I'd rather laugh than cry about it."
Wang Lin, who had been silent since leaving the Sect Master's quarters, suddenly spoke up. "We need to focus on our tasks. There's no time for idle chatter. Yin Mengshuang, Qi Liaxuan, gather the disciples as the Sect Master ordered. Shen Yu, come with me. We need to start planning our defensive strategies immediately."
As the others dispersed, Kai found himself alone, his mind reeling from the sudden change in his role. He knew he needed to start forming his team, but the weight of the responsibility was crushing.
A war. We're actually going to war. And I'm supposed to lead a team into battle. What are my chances of surviving this?
Just then, a hand clapped down on his shoulder, making him jump. He turned to see Elder Xiao, the head of the alchemy department, standing behind him.
"There you are, Disciple Kai," Elder Xiao said, his usually jovial face serious. "I heard about your assignment. It's not what any of us expected, but if anyone can do it, it's you. Come with me, let's discuss what kind of supplies your team will need. You may not be working in the alchemy department, but we'll make sure you're well-equipped for what's ahead. I can’t have you die anytime soon, boy."
Kai nodded, grateful for the elder's support. If he was going to lead his guild into battle, he'd make damn sure they were as prepared as possible.
I might not have wanted this role, but I'm going to do everything in my power to keep my team alive.
