Is Patreon restricting adult content now?

The short answer is "no".

The longer answer, as always, is more nuanced.

There seem to be this misconception that Patreon prohibits using it to fund adult game development, and all adult game devs are using it illegally. This is completely false. 

While it is true that Patreon doesn't allow pornography, Patreon makes a very clear distinction between works containing adult content (like an adult game), and pornography, which Patreon defines as "real people engaging in sexual acts such as masturbation or sexual intercourse on camera. " (Community Guidelines) Since adult games are works of fiction, and not "real people," they are entirely within the type of content that is allowed by Patreon.

Why did some Patreon creators got taken down (temporarily) ? Well, Patreon has an additional policy that prohibit the type of content that are illegal in many places, such as "bestiality", "rape", "child exploitation",  "incest", "necrophilia", or "fetish content that is hard to distinguish from non-consensual sex." The pages that got taken down were those that made references to the terms above on its public front page. Once those references were removed, the suspension were lifted without the creators having to change the contents of the actual game.

This has always been Patreon's policy, but Patreon haven't enforce it (to my knowledge) until recently. But what if Patreon changes its policy in the future and actually starting to restrict adult game development? 

Well, who knows? Unless you work at Patreon and/or have insider knowledge, the future is anybody's guess. But at the present, Patreon's CEO has emphasized that it's policies remains unchanged. 

And so should we be worried? 

The answer is no. 

Because a) we are no making porn, as defined by Patreon, and b) we are not making illegal fetish content, and c) no indication that Patreon will become more restrictive on adult content in the near future.

TLDR: Everything is fine.
